■ Cf-252
On the basis of technical performance, spontaneous fission from Cf-252 is the
most attractive isotopic source for neutron radiography. Its neutron intensity is
limited by economic rather than technical considerations, and the gamma
background is low enough to allow direct-exposure radiography. Cf-252 has
been studied widely and several investigators report the production of useful
radiographs when using this material as the neutron source. The quality of the
radiographs has generally been below the quality obtained from reactors but
this can be improved if long exposure times are acceptable. The source is
well suited for applications which require moderate resolution, an in-house
system, or a source which can be moved.
