3.5 Assemblies Various assemblies and components are usefully inspected by neutron radiography. Rubber "0“ rings in metallic assemblies can be detected to be sure the ring is present and properly seated (see Fig. 9); this is often a difficult task for X-radiography because of the relatively high attenuation of the surrounding metal. Honeycomb assemblies for aerospace and other applications can be inspected with neutrons to show adhesives during manufacture or repair, or to show the presence of water during service. <strong>Neutron</strong> radiographs of composite assemblies show distribution of adhesives or resins. Metallic assemblies can be inspected to show corrosion. This is used primarily for aerospace applications where the metal may be aluminum and the corrosion is an hydroxide which can be detected by neutrons. Charlie Chong/ Fion Zhang
