S. consul at Liverpool andParis ; minister to Spain ; commander-in-chief of the GrandArmy of the Republic; he rounded out his brilliant careerin the quiet, unselfish service of a private citizen.The view from the .foot of Monona avenue holds usfor a few moments: the open lake and the green hillswhich frame itin.Returning up the avenue we go west one block beyondcapitol square, passing the Park hotel, to the DaneCounty Court House (207 W. Main street), with jailand sherill's house adjoining (219 W. Main street). Thecourt house contains the offices of the County Clerk,Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Sheriff, Assessors andOverseers on the first floor; on the upper floors arerooms of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court, the CountyCourt and the Municipal Court. The building was finishedin 1882, and cost $180,000.Opposite the court house is St. Raphael's Church, alarge rectangular building of sandstone, built in 1864 ata cost of $65,000. The parochial school buildings arein the rear.
