2ATHE CITY OF MADISON.The Law School of dark brown stone is next aboveLibrary Hall. It cost $80,000, completed in 1893. Besidesthe lecture rooms and library of the College of Law,itcontains the offices of the Board of Regents and of theUniversitytheArchitect.Directly acrossthe campus from the Law building isEngineering School, built of buff brick at a cost of$100,000, in 1900. It contains steam and electrical machinery,laboratories, special library and reading roomand auditorium, besides the offices of Dean and professorsof the school.North Hall is next above the engineering building ; itscounterpart. South Hall, is opposite, above the Lawschool. They were the first buildings of the University,plain, box-like, stone structures, bare of ornament.They resemble the older dormitories of the eastern collegesand, while giving the impression of age, remind usof conditions now outgrown. In 185 1 North Hall wasbuilt at a cost of $19,000. For four years this was thehome of the University of Wisconsin ; here the studentsand professors lived and worked together. Board waseight}^ cents per week. The German department andthe School of Pharmacy now occupy North Hall.
