44THE CITY OF MADISON.Pursuing our tour we ride between the residences liningthe street, and turning south on Baldwin street reachthe end of the line near the Gisholt machine shops.These and the other manufacturing plants may be inspectedby obtaining permission at the several offices.We return by the same route to Capitol square. Wehave now ridden some seventeen miles in the street cars.The whole distance can be covered at a cost of thirtyfivecents per person, thus making these deHghtful journeyspossible for all.Carriage Drives About the City.Tour Number Five.Raymer Drive, Owen Park, Greenbusii and S. Madison.Much of the cit}^ and its environs remains to be seen.We will take a carriage and drive up Wisconsin avenue.At the corner of the avenue and E. Gorham street is thehome of Ex Senator Wm. F. Vilas, the statliest and mostmagnificent in the city. Turning west upon Langdonstreet we are in the finest residence district. These finehomes with lawns extending down to the lake arethepride of their owners. At No. 150 Langdon street isthe home of U. S. Senator John C. Spooner. At theend of Langdon street we turn up the drive over theUniversity campus; pass Main Hall and down to thesliore of the lake; from here we may drive five milesalong the shore, through allmanner of shrubs, floweringplants and trees to Mendota Beach at the western end ofthe lake. We are impressed by the pleasing variety ofscenerv. Now we q;o throu^i^h an avenue of willows:

Lake Mendota is in full viewDrive througii Universitj' grounds.most of the distance. Between the drive and the shoreare many summer camps and cottages. Some of thesemay be rented and people come from long distances toenjoy here a few weeks of fishing, bathing and restfulcontact with nature.Near the end of Ra3'mer drive we may get a drink ofcold pure water at Merrill Springs.
