Many of these are thew^ork of Mr. J.R. Stuart for thirty years a resident ofMadison.Other local artists are Miss Mary Bunn whopainted the portrait of the late Justice Newman for theSupreme court room; and Miss Leila Dow whose workin china is to be found in the best homes of the city.There are some good pieces of statuary in the city. Thegroup in white marble in the capitol rotunda entitled thegenius of Wisconsin is by Miss Mears, a Wisconsin girl.The bronze figure on the capital park near the easternportico with the title Forward was modeled by a Madisonlady, Miss Jean P. Miner.The Madison Art Association is doing much to increasethe popular taste for art. It gives several exhibitionseach year with interpretative lectures. Somechoice etchings and reproductions of the Greek andRoman sculptures have been secured and placed in theart gallery of the Historical library through the Association.Landscape architecture is shown in the work of theMadison Park and Pleasure Drive Association.Tastefuland beautiful areas have been laid out which appealto all classes. This work has reacted on the publictaste; it is manifest in well kept lawns, shrubbery, vinesand flowers about private homes and where possibleabout the public buildings. The recent architecture of
