<strong>ECP</strong> 2012 · PRAGUEAbout ESPAcknowledgementse BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ESPThe <strong>European</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pathology</strong> (ESP) was establishedin 1963 in Brussels and is a leading force in <strong>European</strong> pathologyand, as such, is pivotal to the future <strong>of</strong> the specialtyin Europe and beyond. As a scientific society, theESP has, as its primary aim, the promotion <strong>of</strong> high qualitydiagnostic practice, applied and translational research andunder- and postgraduate education in the field <strong>of</strong> humanpathology. This is achieved through its congresses, itsjournal Virchows Archiv and various other activities. TheESP interacts with national pathology societies in <strong>European</strong>d has developed links with other EU bodies in close collaborationwith UEMS (Union Euro péenne des MédecinsSpécialistes) and EAPCP (<strong>European</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pathology</strong>Chairs and Programme Directors).The <strong>European</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pathology</strong> under the auspices <strong>of</strong>the ESP and with the support <strong>of</strong> 19 Working Groups representingdifferent fields <strong>of</strong> pathology is involved in theorganisation <strong>of</strong> courses to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> young pathologists.The ESP also provides an infrastructure for qualityassurance projects in diagnostic molecular pathology,such as the ESP QA KRAS project for testing <strong>of</strong> colorectalcancer.
