a c a d e m i c i n f o r m a t i o nAcademic PoliciescontinuedLeave of Absence or Withdrawal from the UniversityThe University requires that all degree-seeking students enrollin course work every fall and spring semester during their academiccareer. Summer sessions are optional.If a student’s academic plans must be discontinued, the studentmust choose one of two options: a Leave of Absence or StudentWithdrawal from the University. The Advising Center can helpstudents decide the more appropriate course of action for theirsituation. Failure to formally request a leave or withdrawal will resultin the automatic removal from the official roll, and the studentmust re-apply through the Admissions Office forreinstatement of degree status.A Leave of Absence releases the student from degree study forone academic semester (not including summer sessions), afterwhich the student may resume study according to regular registrationprocedures, or the student may request an extension ofthe leave of absence for one additional semester, or may withdrawfrom the UniversityA Student Withdrawal from the University (as opposed to acourse withdrawal) is appropriate if the student wishes to discontinuestudy at UMPI for the foreseeable future. This officiallycloses the student’s file and serves as notice that the student initiatedseparation from the University. Failure to withdraw officiallycan seriously complicate any effort later to resume study atthis or another university.Students may request leaves or withdrawals during a semesterif circumstances are such that the student is no longer able tocontinue with coursework. When a request is submitted prior tothe last date for withdrawal without academic penalty (as determinedby the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs andpublished in the academic calendar) a grade of W is recorded forall courses in which the student is currently enrolled.If the request is submitted after the deadline for withdrawalonly extenuating circumstances, as determined by the AcademicAppeals Board, justify the granting of W grades. Requests forleaves of absence and student withdrawals are processed throughthe Advising Center and the Office of Student Records.Course Work at Other InstitutionsMatriculated students may satisfy degree requirements throughstudy at another institution following approval from their advisor;however, grades earned in approved courses taken at another institutionare not included in the cumulative grade point average.Application for GraduationCandidates for degrees must file an Application for Graduationwith the Office of Student Records prior to the end of Novemberpreceding the May ceremony. Graduation credentials willonly be recorded on the transcript, and the degree awarded, whenall degree requirements have been completed. The degree will bedated the same as the transcript.Graduation Participation PolicyStudents lacking no more than six semester hours of credit towardcompletion of all degree requirements OR who have a singleinternship or practicum worth no more than fifteen credit hours,which will be graded on a pass/fail basis may participate in the graduationceremony in May. Either shortfall should be completed bythe following December. Prior to the end of November precedingthe May ceremony, students wishing to participate in graduation asallowed by this policy must file an Application for Graduation withthe Office of Student Records.A student may not participate in two separate graduation exercisesfor the same degree.University of Maine System Transfer Policies & Practices1. Transferring students must provide official transcripts reflectingall previous post-secondary coursework.2. An evaluation of transfer credit will be prepared by the TransferOfficer for each accepted transfer student, and will be availablein the student’s MaineStreet Student Center. The transfer studentshould meet with an academic advisor at the receiving university toreview how the transfer credit will be applied toward the student’sdegree program. Transfer evaluations will be prepared based on thefollowing principles:a) Within the University of Maine System...Undergraduate coursescompleted with a C- or higher, including P grades, will transferfrom one UMS university to another. Grades will be recorded onthe student’s transcript but not computed into the cumulativeGPA.b) Outside the University of Maine System...Credit earned with aC- or higher in courses from regionally accredited colleges/universitiesoutside the UMS will be considered for transfer. Pass-failcourses taken outside the UMS must have “pass” defined as a C- orhigher in order to transfer.c) Generally, course grades do not transfer from one college/universityto another. Semester and cumulative GPA’s reflect onlythose courses taken at the home university. Students in cooperativedegree programs should inquire about any exceptions that mayapply.d) Coursework defined as developmental by the University towhich the student is transferring will not be awarded degree credit.Developmental courses are considered preparatory to college-levelwork, and will not count towards a degree.e) Courses from colleges and universities outside the UnitedStates will be accepted for transfer consistent with established universitypolicies and practices.3. Credit may be awarded for high school Advanced Placement(AP) exams, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, orcollege-level knowledge gained through life experience (e.g., priorlearning, such as military or other training) when validated throughthe approved campus processes.4.
