a c a d e m i c i n f o r m a t i o nAthletic Training Education ProgramRequirementsThe University of Maine at Presque Isle Athletic Training EducationProgram is a competitive admissions program housed inthe College of Professional Programs. Currently, students are enrolledto the University designated as Athletic Training Majors,but are not admitted to the program until the spring of theirsophomore year.The Athletic Training Education program includes a GeneralEducation Curriculum, subject area emphasis, and a professionalsequence of methodology and clinical experiences. The GeneralEducation Curriculum provides students with a broad foundationin the liberal arts and sciences. The subject emphasis area involvesan in-depth study of the athletic training discipline andcoordination of clinical experiences with various populations andsettings.Students are permitted to participate in one intercollegiate athleticsport per year during their program admission; however, theymust manage and fulfill the clinical demands of the program. Studentswho wish to participate in intercollegiate athletics while inthe Program should contact the Program Director.Students are responsible for providing their own transportationto off-site clinical experiences.Program AdmissionIn the fall of the student’s sophomore year a pre-professionalcandidacy period is served, consisting of directed observations invarious allied health settings (50 hours). At completion of the candidacyperiod, the student receives a formal interview from membersof the athletic training staff, teaching faculty, andadministration for determination of admission. The followingcriteria are utilized for the admission and selection process:✓ candidates must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or greater;✓ the following courses must be completed with a grade ‘C’ orhigher during the pre-professional phase: ATH 101, ATH 225,ATH 244, BIO 261, BIO 261L, HPR 101, PHE 340;✓ completion of Candidacy Application Packet;✓ evaluation of clinical observation performance;✓ evaluation of references and;✓ compliance with all required policies and procedures.All items will be evaluated by the selection committee and applicantsplaced in rank order based on the above criteria. The topranking applicants will be offered admission to the program basedon available positions. Even though applicants may meet all selectioncriteria, they may still be denied admission based on rankorder. Students are permitted to apply twice to the program.Technical standards for admission can be found in the program’sPolicy and Procedure Manual.Transfer StudentsTransfer students are expected to fulfill all prerequisite coursework and admission/selection criteria as other non-transfer students.Previous athletic training course work will not be accepted.Professional Standing in the Athletic TrainingEducation ProgramIn order for students to pass through the Athletic Training EducationProgram, students must complete five clinical proficiencylevels over a minimum period of two and half years. The clinicaleducation component involves the acquisition and practice ofentry-level athletic training clinical integration proficiencies(CIPs) through clinical education course work. The clinical experienceencompasses an opportunity for the student to applythese CIP’s experientially to the active population under the directsupervision of a preceptor in an approved approved clinicalenvironment (i.e., the athletic training room, practice/game coverage,high school, physical therapy clinics, etc.).Students are eligible to enter the clinical education programafter successful completion of their pre-professional phase (initialthree semesters) and admission into the Athletic Training EducationProgram. The student will be required to do the followingin order to progress to the next clinical level:✓ complete appropriate clinical proficiency skills satisfactorily forthe designated clinical level;✓ satisfactorily pass the final practical exam for the assigned clinicallevel;✓ possess a satisfactory mid-term and final overall clinical assessmentperformance and;✓ maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater and obtain a “C”in athletic training emphasis courses.Accreditation StatusThe program is nationally accredited through the Commissionon Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), whichgranted a renewal in accreditation in 2010.
