Means <strong>of</strong> Escape• The objective is to provide means <strong>of</strong> escape so th<strong>at</strong> persons onboardcan safely and swiftly escape to the lifebo<strong>at</strong> and liferaft embark<strong>at</strong>iondeck• At least 2 widely separ<strong>at</strong>ed and ready means <strong>of</strong> escape shall beprovided from all spaces or group <strong>of</strong> spaces• Lifts shall not be considered as forming one <strong>of</strong> the means <strong>of</strong> escaperequiredM.Ventura <strong>SOLAS</strong> - Fire Protection 75Means <strong>of</strong> Escape - General Requirements• Stairways and ladders shall arranged to provide ready means <strong>of</strong>escape to the lifebo<strong>at</strong> and liferaft embark<strong>at</strong>ion deck from passengerand crew accommod<strong>at</strong>ion spaces and from spaces in which the crew isnormally employed, other than machinery spaces.• A corridor, lobby, or part <strong>of</strong> a corridor from which there is only oneroute <strong>of</strong> escape shall be prohibited.• Dead-end corridors used in service areas which are necessary for thepractical utility <strong>of</strong> the ship, shall be permitted, provided they aresepar<strong>at</strong>ed from crew accommod<strong>at</strong>ion areas and are inaccessible frompassenger accommod<strong>at</strong>ion areas.• A part <strong>of</strong> a corridor th<strong>at</strong> has a depth not exceeding its width isconsidered a recess or local extension and is permitted.M.Ventura <strong>SOLAS</strong> - Fire Protection 7638
