Ro/Ro Spaces - Cargo Ships• The drainage system shall be sized to remove no less than 125% ofthe combined capacity of both the water spraying system pumps andthe required number of fire hose nozzles• The drainage system valves shall be operable from outside theprotected space at a position in the vicinity of the extinguishingsystem controls.• Bilge wells shall be of sufficient holding capacity and shall bearranged at the side shell of the ship at a distance from each other ofnot more than 40 m in each watertight compartment.• If this is not possible the adverse effect upon stability of the addedweight and free surface of water shall be taken into account to theextent deemed necessary by the AdministrationM.Ventura SOLAS - Fire Protection 95Fire Protection in Ro/Ro Spaces• Portable extinguishers shall be provided at each deck level in eachhold or compartment where vehicles are carried, spaced not more than20 m apart on both sides of the space.• At least one portable fire-extinguisher shall be located at each accessto such a cargo space.• Additionally, vehicle, Ro-Ro and special category spaces intended forthe carriage of motor vehicles with fuel in their tanks for their ownpropulsion shall be provided with:– At least 3 water fog applicators– 1 portable foam applicator unit, provided that at least two suchunits are available in the ship for use in such ro-ro spaces.Ventilation System• Enclosed garage spaces shall have ventilation system guaranteeing 6renov./hour, based on the empty volumeM.Ventura SOLAS - Fire Protection 9648
