WHAT IS TEDxMcAllen?TEDxMcAllen is an organization that seeks to provide a number of opportunitiesin McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley for people to share ideas, learn about ourlocal innovators, and help figure out how to transform our community into thebest that it can be. We were created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worthspreading.” Our events are planned and coordinated by a team of volunteerswith support from individuals and organizations from across the Rio GrandeValley. In 2014 we produced our first event licensed by TED, TEDxMcAllen LIVE at theInternational Museum of Art and Science. This was an important event for usbecause we wanted to gauge the level of interest in the McAllen area for anevent of this style. The second TEDxLive event took place earlier this year atthe McAllen Creative Incubator. Now that we have built momentum for this,we have set out to feature local ideas, local speakers, and produce a standaloneevent showcasing our area. The result is TEDxMcAllen – a one day event held at the McAllen ConventionCenter on October 6 th , featuring the best speakers possible to address our2015 theme, "Breaking Borders." Our audience will consist of a limited groupof invited guests.BREAKING BORDERSSituated right next to the Mexican border, McAllen has been shaped by the colliding oftwo worlds. This collision created McAllen’s identity, forging its culture and its people. However, in recent years this collision has strained our identity, forcing us to reinvent whowe are and pose the question, “Who will we be?”People have been crossing borders daily for quite some time now. From the South, peopleare leaving behind conflict and bringing with them memories of a journey unlike any otherand a determination to succeed at all costs. From the North, comes progress — newcompanies are making their home in the Rio Grande Valley and bringing with them peoplefrom all over the world with new insights and expectations for the region. We welcome this growth with open arms, but are acutely aware that such growth cannotcome without growing pains. Progress is inevitable. The McAllen region will have to breakthrough to a new identity. An identity defined with an established culture and a pushtowards progress. But along the way we must ask ourselves:• Who are we?• Where are we from?• What has defined us?• Where are we going?Innovation is the only way to deal with the changes that are upon us. Innovation startswith a simple idea. We at TEDxMcAllen feel that we have sought for and found innovativevoices in our community. TEDxMcAllen is committed to providing a platform for thesevoices to share their idea with McAllen and the world. The selection effort was long and arduous. We wanted to make sure that our speakerswere an accurate representation of McAllen as a region and various concerns and strugglesthat people from McAllen and Valleyites have had to deal with.
