hard to ensure a successful and thoughtful
event. Last week, we were hit by a natural disaster that
left us feeling guilty about moving forward with our
fundraiser. Together with the staff at the American
Cancer Society, we agreed that the show must go
on. The funds raised today will help cancer patients
in different ways. Your donations will help fund
research, provide patients with transportation, and
other accommodations patients need. We must press
on. Cancer does not stop, so we won't stop fighting!

upcoming show on the Chevy Main Stage at the
State Fair of Texas after the big Texas vs. Oklahoma
"Red River Rivalry" game on Saturday, Oct. 15th, The
Powell Brothers are a much sought after act at some of the
country's largest fairs, festivals, and special events.
The Powell Brothers have shared the stage with top national
touring acts including Willie Nelson, Josh Turner, Gary
Allan, Dwight Yoakum, Granger Smith, Mark Chesnutt,
The Bellamy Brothers, and Pat Green to name a few. Also,
the band just partnered with ESPN Events to perform at
the 2017 Las Vegas Bowl on December 16th on ABC.

2017 Honoree
diagnosis of cancer and the subsequent treatment
is grueling for anyone. Chemotherapy treatment in
particular not only affects how a person feels physically,
but it can also take a toll on body image and emotional health
due to its hair-loss-inducing effects. But 17-year-old Andrea Sierra
Salazar turned what was at first a blow to her confidence into
something empowering: the embracing of her loss of hair in a series
of stunning photos.
Andrea was diagnosed with stage 2 nodular sclerosis Hodgkin
lymphoma in February, 2016. She discovered a lump in her neck
and another tumor was later found in her chest, requiring her to
undergo chemotherapy, which led to her hair falling out. Andrea
began to devote more time to modeling after her diagnosis when
treatment kept her from attending school. Her mother helped her
get in touch with photographers and agencies who wished to help
Andrea remain confident as her treatment continued.
Andrea came up with the concept of a princess without a wig,
whose empowering caption reached hundreds of thousands of likes
and shares as it went viral. At first, she was hesitant to shoot photos
without a wig, but her strength inspired viewers around the world.
“Before chemotherapy I had always been a confident person,” said
Andrea. “So when my hair started to fall out, I would look in the mirror
and I wouldn’t feel that confident about myself." “I see all these little
girls, and you can see it in their faces that they lose all self confidence,”
she added.

Nearly $30.4 million in cancer research grants are currently being funded in our state.

Clinical data suggests that exposure to estrogen can decrease a woman’s risk of colon cancer. Societyfunded
grantee, Clinton Allred, PhD, with Texas A&M University, is working to understand how estrogen
can partially protect women from colon cancer prior to menopause by slowing down and/or stopping the
tumor formation. This study will also help inform future approaches to colon cancer treatment in women.

GENERAL AUCTION RULES
• Silent Auction is from 6:00 pm – 9:45 pm. Live Auction
begins after 9:00 pm and continues until all items have
been sold.
• Payments by successful bidder must be made before you
leave. You may settle at the check-out area via cash, check
or credit card. Payment in full is expected tonight.
• All sales are final. There are no exchanges nor refunds on
items.
• All auction items are offered “as is”. Any description of an
auction item is for the sole purpose of identifying the item.
Seller disclaims any expressed or implied warranties with
respect to the auction items. Bidders are encouraged to
preview items before auction/bidding.
• All donors’ situations will be specifically outlined and must
be honored by purchaser.
• Items may be removed this evening only after payment is
received. Other arrangements for pickup or delivery must
be made at the check-out area with a staff member. Any
shipping fees are the responsibility of the purchaser.
• All applicable federal, state and other taxes must be paid
by the purchaser.
• Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services
must be used by “good through date”.
• The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall
be the buyer. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer
shall have the sole and final discretion to determine the
successful bidder or to auction the item again.
• Group purchases are welcome. However, one person must
be responsible for the bidding and interim purchases (if

The American Cancer Society helps people get answers and
support when they need it the most. We serve millions of
people every year with trusted information, day-to-day help,
and emotional support through our vital patient services and
programs. When you or someone you love is diagnosed with
cancer, we are there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – online
or on the phone. We offer the latest cancer information and
resources, including information on diagnosis and treatment,
through our National Cancer Information Center (1-800-
227-2345) and cancer.org. Our trained specialists can even
help match patients with clinical trials and make it easier to
understand health insurance benefits.
Through our patient support programs like Road To Recovery®,
we’re helping patients with one of their toughest challenges –
getting to treatment. Trained volunteer drivers donate their
time and the use of their personal vehicles to help patients
get to the treatments they need. When treatment takes you
away from home, we also partner with local hotels across
the country to provide free or reduced-rate rooms for cancer
patients and their caregivers traveling for treatment. When
you need a hand to guide you through your cancer experience,
our Patient Navigators give patients and their family’s one-onone
support at treatment facilities. They provide information
and connect you with day-to-day help and emotional support.
Our Look Good Feel Better program offers complimentary
group and individual beauty sessions that include lessons on
skin care and cosmetics, nail care, wigs, turbans, accessories
and styling to help people with cancer manage their disease
and treatment with greater confidence.
Whether its information and resources, transportation,
lodging, support and much more, your gift helps the American
Cancer Society make a difference in the lives of those facing
cancer. All Fund the Mission gifts are 100% tax deductible.
