As the Collegeremembered our ANZACs in movingcommemoration services on ANZACDay, St Virgil’s College studentsparticipated in strong numbers as part ofrecord crowds who attended all of theceremonies, including those conductedin Hobart and Glenorchy. It is always with a sense of pride that theboys actively involve themselves insignificant events such as the ANZACDay ceremonies and we congratulateall the students who attended onthe weekend to remember ourfallen soldiers. The day prior to ANZAC Day studentswere involved in a moving ceremonyhonouring the memory of soldiersburied at Cornelian Bay.The Headstone Project which saw theunveiling of new headstones for some ofthe returned Catholic soldiers laid to restat the cemetery, providing each with therecognition and dignity they so richlydeserved. Students researched the livesof each soldier, providing a poignantsummary for the official programmecommemorating the day.The College also conducted movingceremonies at each campus toacknowledge the great work of ourANZACs. Boys acknowledged howextremely fortunate we are to have hadsuch courageous forefathers andacknowledged that their efforts haveallowed us to live the fortunate lives thatwe do. Itwas a busy and enjoyable day, where wegot to put our combined skills andingenuity to the test along with studentsfrom several other schools. There wereeight different activities that the teamswere involved in: Future Power, Graspingat Straws, Helter Skelter Shelter,Stringways, Mission to Mars, HoverFrenzy, Eco-Habitech and Bridge. Thechallenges tested problem solving abilitiesand teamwork, as we were supplied withonly limited resources to fulfil the brief. For the Hover Frenzy challenge we wereprovided with: Polystyrene, a plastic bag, balsa wood, a ruler, cutting block and saw,a controller and battery pack and somefans. From this we had to construct aworking hovercraft which had to pass atest for speed, agility and ride height. Some of the activities went for thewhole day, others were divided into twohalf-day sessions. By the end of the firstsession, St Virgil’s were in the lead. After the last event of the day, which wasthe Bridge Challenge, the final resultswere released and we finished in a verycredible fourth place.
