WORDS & DEEDS - 21CyclingKellevie Hillbilly 24Hour MTB RaceMr Steve AitkenThree teams of intrepid riders took onthe massive challenge of completing theKellevie Hillbilly 24 Hour MTB race. <strong>In</strong>great conditions the boys rode thechallenging 9 km course from 12 noonSaturday to 12 noon on Sunday. Theenergy and commitment of riders neverwaned regardless of whether they wereriding at 4 am or the more civilised timeof 4 pm! We had two teams in the sixrider category and one elite team in thefour person event – the elite team ofJosh and Mitch Gittus, Adam Oates andOscar Bannerman came 4th riding invery impressive company.With the support of our amazing parentsupport crew who fed the boys (andensured they were awake for their earlymorning take-off!) the teams put inexcellent performances. The team ofAdam Roberts, Isaac and Lachlan King,Declan Waddington and Thomas Attrillwon their section of the event. JackDireen, Joe Young, Jaidyn Gluskie, BenManton and Alec Weaver rodeimpressively to finish third.SoccerEREA Premiersand Champions!Congratulations to the St Virgil’s 1st XISoccer Team who won the <strong>In</strong>termediateDivision of the Edmund Rice EducationAustralia Tournament in Brisbaneduring the first term holidays defeatingParade College, Victoria 2-0 in a highquality Grand Final. The team wereundefeated for the week recording thefollowing results:Semi Final - SVC 3 defeated St Patrick’sCollege, Shornecliffe (QLD) 0Round 2 - SVC 3 defeated GregoryTerrace (QLD) 0Round 1 - SVC 7 defeated St Laurence’sCollege (QLD) 0The team were outstanding ambassadorsfor the College and greatly enjoyed meetingboys from other EREA schools from acrossAustralia. The team played some highquality soccer and impressed all opponentswith their silky skills, team work andexcellent sportsmanship. Boys also greatlyenjoyed a billet experience furtherincreasing their understanding andappreciation of our special bond with otherEREA schools. Special thanks to coaches MrSimon Orlowski and Mr Jason McDonaldfor looking after the boys on the trip.Tennis2nd IV Tennis FinalSVC defeated Hutchins Gold 5 – 1(33 – 15)S. Plunkett-Smith d W. Johnstone / M.Burgess 3 – 6.The boys were very confident going intothe Final against Hutchins, but knewthey still had to be on their game tomake sure of the result. Sam and Jakobwere once again very strong as thenumber 1 and 2 combination, with Sammaking short work of his opponent andJakob making slightly harder work withhis game, but coming through in theend. Andrew made a welcome return bydefeating his opponent in a strongperformance and Oscar engaging in avery close fought struggle with severalrallies going as long as some elite playerswould be used to seeing.It was a fantastic way to finish a successfulseason to bring home the trophy - whichup until <strong>this</strong> year, only had Hutchinsname on it!July 2015 Vol. 12 No. 2
