28 - THE OLD VIRGILIANSpecial Visitor<strong>In</strong> March the College was privileged tohave a visit from one of our mostprominent Old Virgilians, Australianbatting coach, Michael Di Venuto.Michael was home for the World Cupfixtures at Bellerive and took time out ofhis busy schedule to come out and visit.Part of his visit was to drop off adonation to the College; amazingly it wasMichael Clark’s current bat! Just beforehis visit Michael Clarke broke a piece outof a bat during practice and kindly gaveit to Michael who had it signed by theentire World Cup Squad and donated itto the College.2015 Queen’sBirthday HonoursCongratulations to a number of OldVirgilians who were recognised for theiroutstanding service to the community inthe 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours list:Michael spoke to the boys about hiscurrent role as Batting Coach with theAustralian Cricket Team and one of hiskey messages was the importance of‘keeping it real and having fun’.He spoke of each one of those membersof the Australian Cricket Team, how theyall started their journey as young boysloving the game. Their dedication andcommitment to the sport has led themto their current positions as members ofthe Australian Team but he emphasisedwith the boys that even though it is theircurrent job, if they are not having funthen it will become a chore and they losetheir purpose and focus. This is apowerful message for all boys who are‘chasing their dreams’ in so many fieldsof curricular and extra-curricularactivities at the College.We thank Michael for his generouscontribution to the College and we arefortunate to have him as an ambassadorof ours, travelling the world. He spokeglowingly of his time at the College andchallenged the boys to continue to bethe best that they can be and make themost of every opportunity theyencounter.• Paul Anthony Lennon AO (SVC1965-1973) For distinguished serviceto the Parliament and Community ofTasmania, to economic diversificationand sustainability, to improved socialwelfare opportunities, to majorinfrastructure development, and toreconciliation.• Pierre W. Slicer AO QC (SVC 1951-60) Pierre was recognised for hisservice to the judiciary both nationallyand in the Pacific. The honour alsorecognizes his work in the areas ofsocial justice and policy reform.• Michael Mervyn Clarke AM (SVC1961-62). Michael received his award(posthumously) for his significantservice to public health – particularlyin terms of HIV / AIDS awareness andpublic administration.• Tony Foster AM – Mayor of Brighton.Parent of former students Stephen andJames. The Jubilee gathering.1Some eighty people, several frominterstate, gathered at the Cornelian BayHockey Centre on the evening ofNovember 12 to celebrate the GoldenJubilee of the Old Virgilians AthleticsClub (aka the Southern Saints).Keynote addresses to mark theoccasion were delivered by Brian Roe,President of Athletics Tasmania, whoprovided an overview of the athleticsscene in Tasmania and the challenges<strong>this</strong> sport faces. Graeme Rainbow‘came off the bench’ to replace OVSimon Hollingsworth who was unableto attend due to the early arrival ofchild number three.
