16 - WORDS & DEEDSGrade 5 CampUnder stormy skies, Grade 5 headed offon their annual pilgrimage to PortArthur. Unfortunately campers weren’tblessed with the magnificent weatherthat we have had in recent years, however this did not deter the boys fromhaving a fantastic time. There weresome interesting rafts designed andconstructed – some did actually float.Unfortunately, the fishermen didn’t havemuch luck with the rod and reel andonly successfully caught some seaweed! The boys also enjoyed their walk alongthe foreshore exploring what the highertide leaves behind.A highlight of the first day was watchinghow successful our ‘volcano’ buildingwas. Some were really successful whilstothers created a real smoke screen. After a restful night, the boys were readyfor their investigation around the PortArthur Historic Site. The weather improved as the dayprogressed which allowed for a thoroughinvestigation of our convict past. Sadlythe last day’s weather was not the best. But, every cloud has a silver lining so wetravelled to Remarkable Cave to see thebeauty and the fury that mother naturecan throw up at the same time. The boyswere amazed by the power of the waterand the effects of the very strong winds.A big thank you to all of our enthusiasticdads who came along and helped outover the three days. Thank you also toMrs Messer, Mrs Ogle and Miss Lack fortheir organisation of the camp andpreparation of the boys leading up to it.Also, a great big thank you to MrsBlizzard for her wonderful catering – wewere certainly well fed.ICC World CupWhat a fantastic night we had at the ICCWorld Cup Cricket game betweenScotland and Sri Lanka. By all accountswe were heard across the whole groundand also received a lot of national andinternational media attention – eventrending on Twitter in India! The boysare to be commended for theirenthusiasm and congratulated for theirbehaviour. Many of the ground staff andother spectators went out of their way tocomment positively and favourably onthe boys’ enthusiasm and behaviour.Well done boys!Congratulations also to Mr Scanlon whomight get a job as a fielding coach if hegets tired of teaching! We would like tothank the parent of an Old Virgilian forgenerously purchasing the tickets to givethe boys the opportunity to attend.July 2015 Vol. 12 No. 2
