I have no doubt that memory is essential to any nation’s mental health. The Shoahmust therefore have an important place in the nation’s memorial mosaic. But the waysthings are done today—the absolute monopoly and the dominance of the Shoah onevery aspect of our lives—transforms this holy memory into a ridiculous sacrilege andconverts piercing pain into hollowness and kitsch. As time passes, the deeper we arestuck in our Auschwitz past, the more difficult it becomes to be free of it. We retreatfrom independence to the inner depths of exile, its memories, and horrors. Israeltoday is much less independent than it was at her founding, more Holocaustic than itwas three years after the gates of the Nazi death factories opened.
