Standing on this frosty peakputs you on the Roof of Africa, where you can gaze down on theclouds, and up across acres of blue sky.Known as the Whisky Route, Machame follows a quieter path to thesummit and offers a more authentic experience than the busier ‘CocaCola’ Marangu Route. This adventure will take you from the bustlingtown of Moshi, through rainforests, over moorland & alpine desert, tothe eternal snow which caps this iconic mountain. Our programme is designed to give you the best chance of reachingthe summit safely. We will provide a carefully selected menu, highlyexperienced and qualified guides, and an itinerary that follows theprinciples of “walk high, sleep low” to allow for proper acclimatisation.Nothing can match the feeling of reaching the summit with your teamand watching the sun rise over the East African plains. This trip trulyis a must for anyone with a sense of adventure!Adventure Fact File:Country: TanzaniaElevation: 5,895 mDuration: 16 daysRegistration fee: £345(£295 with student discount)Rare Adventures LtdUnit 15, City Business CentreLondon SE16 2XBwww.rareadventures.co.ukinfo@rareadventures.co.uk+44(0)20 347 55009

Information Pack 2016Mount KilimanjaroMachame Route3: HELEN & DOUGLAS HOUSEAn introduction to Helen & Douglas HouseHelen & Douglas House cares for terminally ill children, young adultsand their families through exceptional hospice care.Dear Future Kilimanjaro Conqueror,By summiting Kilimanjaro for Helen & Douglas House, not only will you be summiting the highest free- standing mountain inthe world, but you will also be helping the amazing work that goes on in the hospices- Caring for children, young adult’s andtheir families who have been affected by a life- shortening condition. It costs £5.25 million a year to fund the work of Helen & Douglas House- With 85% of this needing to come from voluntaryincome. Your support means we can continue to reach this goal year- on- year and keep supporting our families. One example of the work your fundraising can support is the Elephant Club. The death of a child or having a brother or sister with a life limiting illness affects the whole family. At Helen & DouglasHouse we believe that like parents, brothers and sisters need support too. The Elephant Club offers support for siblings ofchildren and young adults known to Helen & Douglas House.Often children and young adults are worried about discussing their fears and concerns with their parents because they don’twant to add to their worries. Having a safe place to voice their concerns can help the young person feel less anxious andless alone, especially if they know that they won’t be judged for how they feel.We can do this by providing a safe environment for siblings of children and youngadults known to Helen & Douglas House to share their feelings, whether it’sindividually with our Sibling Support Team or in a group with other young people. We recognise that every child and young adult is unique and we support themwith a range of activities. One mum said “One day my eight year old daughter came home from ElephantClub and said to me, ‘I met a girl today and she’s got a sister in heaven as well.’ Itwas great for her to see that she is not alone and that she wasn’t to blame foranything.”The Elephant Club is just one example of how your fundraising helps Helen &Douglas House. Altitude (m)Information Pack 2016Mount KilimanjaroMachame Route13: TRAININGThe nutrition provided, acclimatisation schedule and guides will give you a great chance of reaching the top, however you can significantly improve your chances by training in advance. Everyone who takes part in theMount Kilimanjaro adventure should be comfortable walking for long periods. You should be comfortablewalking for 6 hours at a moderate pace while carrying a 5-10 kg pack.WALKING TRAININGYou will walk every step of the way from Machame Gate to the summit and back again, over uneven, steepterrain. Mount Kilimanjaro is like a marathon, not a sprint! This climb is about endurance and, as mentioned, youmust be comfortable walking for 6 hours at a moderate pace while carrying a 5-10 kg pack. By preparing themuscles used for trekking, you will recover more quickly at the end of each day, and wake up with fewer achesand pains.RESISTANCE TRAININGWhile cardio training and preparing your body for the rigours of prolonged periods of trekking are essential, some resistance training will also prove useful. Hiking can place strain on your knees and back, so it is a goodidea to focus on these areas. When training, it’s not about lifting the heaviest weight you can. Do exercises insets, starting with lighter weights, as this will build up endurance rather than bulk.ELEVATION CHARTThe chart below shows the daily elevation for each camp and acclimatisation hike. By gradually progressing to each camp and takingour time, your body will have the best chance of adjusting to the increased altitude.6000500040003000200010000Moshi Moshi MachameGateMachameHutMachameHutShira HutLavaTowerBarrancoCampBarrancoCampBarafuCampUhuruPeakMwekaHutMwekaGateMoshiDay:1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 3.5 4.0 4.5 5.0 5.5 6.0 6.5 7.0 7.5Please note: the chart is not a profile of the mountain!Rare Adventures LtdUnit 15, City Business CentreLondon SE16 2XBwww.rareadventures.co.ukinfo@rareadventures.co.uk+44(0)20 347 55009

Information Pack 2016Mount KilimanjaroMachame Route23: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?At altitude, your body burns far more calories than at sea level. During the climb, we will have a dedicated cookwith the team, who will prepare 3 fresh meals a day. Your meals will be high in carbs and calories, consistingmostly of pasta, soups, stews and fruit. During the climb, you will find that the guides and crew will encourageyou to eat as much as you can – even if you’re not hungry. This helps counter the effects of altitude andincreases your chances of success on summit night. It’s not unusual for some of our clients to return from aclimb saying they’ve put on weight rather than lost it!If you have any specific dietary requirements, our team can make reasonable adjustments to cater for this. Whensigning up, please specify your individual needs. After the climb, we will be treated to a celebratory meal back at the hotel, where you can toast your success withyour team-mates and friends.WHAT WEATHER SHOULD I EXPECT?Mountain weather can be a law unto itself, and Kilimanjaro is no different. At lowerelevations, it will be warm enough to hike in a light shirt, while Barranco Camp andabove could see temperatures drop below freezing. During our summit attempttemperatures will be at their lowest – potentially -20°C. Please review the kit list in thisinformation pack for a guide on what to pack.HOW MANY GUIDES AND CREW WILL THERE BE?The group will be accompanied at all times by our head guide, who will have overall command of the climb. There will also be a team of assistant guides, porters and the team cook.During the summit attempt, we ensure a minimum ratio of 1 crew member to every 3 clients. This ensures thatshould anyone decide to turn back, there will be someone available to escort them back to Barafu Camp.WHAT PAPERWORK DO I NEED?You will need to obtain the following documents in order to take part in the Kilimanjaroclimb:A Tanzanian visaA Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (if spending more than 12 hours in Kenya)A valid travel insurance certificateA completed medical form (if you have declared any medical conditions during registration)We can provide you with the required documentation for your visa application. Please remember that your bank maycharge a transaction fee on this, sometimes as much as 5%. Remember to tellyour bank you will be travelling.CAN I LEAVE SOME LUGGAGE IN MOSHI?If you are planning on travelling after the climb, and don’t want to take your clothes for this with you, there are left-luggage facilities available at the team hotel in Moshi at no extra cost.HOW MUCH BAGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON THE CLIMB?During the climb, a porter will carry your main bag, while you will carry your day pack with your water, snacks, camera and other personal items.
