Information Pack 2016<strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong>Machame Route22: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?<strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> is a trekking peak, which means you will not need any technical climbingskills or training to reach the summit. Our team will follow an established trekkingroute, and our guides will take the lead. We advise that all clients haveexperience of hill walking in the UK, and are comfortable hiking for up to 6 hours perday with a 5-10 kg pack.HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?All participants should be in very good physical condition, preferably able to trek for 6 hours per day at areasonable pace. You will spend prolonged periods at altitude during the climb, and the effects of this are notto be underestimated. We allow for plenty of time to acclimatise, however we do recommend you consult withyour GP if you are unsure.All participants with pre-existing medical conditions will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire with theirGP.DO I NEED ANY SPECIALIST KIT?The right kit can be the difference between a successful climb and one that ends early. Take a look at the kit listin this information pack for more details on the gear we recommend. Selected items are available for hire.WILL I NEED ANY VACCINATIONS?The NHS recommends a course of anti-malarial medication, along with up-to-dateprimary courses & boosters. Vaccinations against cholera, hepatitis B, rabies andYellow Fever should also be considered. Please refer to the NHS Fit for Travel websitefor more information.HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET FOR THIS ADVENTURE?You will need to cover the cost of your visa ($40), vaccinations (est. £100-300) and insurance (Rare Carepolicy £94, other policies are available). You will also need to purchase kit and accessories (cost variesdepending on personal preference). All transfers and accommodation in the itinerary are included, along with allmeals in Moshi and on the mountain. You will need personal spending money for souvenirs & alcoholic drinks,plus your tips for the crew, extra snacks, and any additional travel you choose to undertake. We recommendan amount between £250-500 ($385-770).CAN I BOOK MY OWN FLIGHTS?You are able to book a land-only adventure through Rare Adventures and meet ourteam in Moshi before the climb. You can fly directly to <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> InternationalAirport (JRO) or to Dar es Salaam (DAR) and transfer to Moshi.
