His favourites are Biševo <strong>an</strong>d Vis because <strong>of</strong> its caves:<br />
- The Green Cave on the isl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Vis is a magical place<br />
because if one dives <strong>in</strong>to it at the right time <strong>of</strong> day,<br />
around noon, the open<strong>in</strong>g on the ceil<strong>in</strong>g lets <strong>in</strong>side just<br />
enough sunrays to make the cave surreally green. On<br />
the isl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Vis there are plenty <strong>of</strong> beautiful submar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
“walls”, cliffs covered with gorgoni<strong>an</strong>s, even one<br />
sunk airpl<strong>an</strong>e which is at a bigger depth <strong>an</strong>d therefore<br />
too deep for recreational div<strong>in</strong>g. On the other h<strong>an</strong>d,<br />
one needs to wonder about the state <strong>of</strong> the submar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
world <strong>in</strong> our national parks <strong>an</strong>d ask itself whether it<br />
is protected enough – says Žižak, confirm<strong>in</strong>g the wellknown<br />
fact that, despite <strong>of</strong> protection regulations, <strong>in</strong><br />
practice it is hard to put <strong>an</strong> end to all <strong>of</strong> those abus<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the natural resources <strong>of</strong> the Croati<strong>an</strong> submar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
world.<br />
However, he most frequently dives <strong>in</strong> his “own” maritime<br />
zone around Trogir <strong>an</strong>d Split, <strong>an</strong>d when speak<strong>in</strong>g about<br />
these waters the place where he found the best div<strong>in</strong>g<br />
locations is the southern part <strong>of</strong> the isl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Šolta that<br />
is, as he claims, still rather wild <strong>an</strong>d unexplored. The best<br />
time for div<strong>in</strong>g is noon because <strong>of</strong> good visibility, but<br />
night dives c<strong>an</strong> be especially excit<strong>in</strong>g because <strong>of</strong> different<br />
night habits <strong>of</strong> the submar<strong>in</strong>e fauna – some predators<br />
are more active, some fish “sleep” <strong>an</strong>d are so calm<br />
that one c<strong>an</strong> get real close to them.<br />
Tame Octopus<br />
Believe it or not, even sea <strong>an</strong>imals c<strong>an</strong> be tamed, so<br />
most <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>structors have their secret spots where<br />
they take their groups to “befriend” with a particular<br />
octopus or a lobster, for example. But, more <strong>an</strong>d<br />
more fish-poachers track<strong>in</strong>g org<strong>an</strong>ised div<strong>in</strong>g groups<br />
“visit<strong>in</strong>g” the sea fauna, f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>an</strong>imals that have no fear<br />
<strong>of</strong> people <strong>an</strong>d without <strong>an</strong>y scrupuls shoot them with a<br />
spear-fish<strong>in</strong>g gun. – In this way we befriended with a<br />
mum octopus that was sitt<strong>in</strong>g on her eggs <strong>an</strong>d everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
was just f<strong>in</strong>e until one day a fish-poacher saw us.<br />
The next time we came to that spot we just saw a diver<br />
with a gun pull<strong>in</strong>g the octopus on the boat. Of course,<br />
we never saw the octopus aga<strong>in</strong> – says the owner<br />
<strong>of</strong> the “Resnik” div<strong>in</strong>g centre that, because <strong>of</strong> events<br />
like these, rarely speaks about the locations where one<br />
may f<strong>in</strong>d tamed <strong>an</strong>imals. He even claims that you c<strong>an</strong><br />
tell by the look a fish has whether she is scared or will<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for some hum<strong>an</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>y. The regulations <strong>of</strong> underwater<br />
fish<strong>in</strong>g strictly <strong>in</strong>hibit underwater fish<strong>in</strong>g with “scuba”<br />
gear, me<strong>an</strong><strong>in</strong>g div<strong>in</strong>g t<strong>an</strong>ks. On the other h<strong>an</strong>d divers<br />
are mostly end<strong>an</strong>gered by irresponsible behaviour <strong>of</strong><br />
yachtsmen that ignore buoys <strong>an</strong>d flags that obligatorily<br />
mark the dive spot. Some sea speed lovers, unfamiliar<br />
with sea behaviour regulations, are even drawn to the<br />
marked dive spot so they start approach<strong>in</strong>g it, which is<br />
extremely d<strong>an</strong>gerous for divers.<br />
In the end, <strong>an</strong>ybody will<strong>in</strong>g to participate <strong>in</strong> div<strong>in</strong>g should<br />
be relatively healthy: asthmatics <strong>an</strong>d people suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from heart diseases shouldn’t expose themselves<br />
to this attractive but dem<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g sport, <strong>an</strong>d the same<br />
goes for those that like to “have some night fun” – h<strong>an</strong>gover,<br />
dehydration <strong>an</strong>d div<strong>in</strong>g at bigger depths are a<br />
very risky comb<strong>in</strong>ation. Everybody else c<strong>an</strong> without <strong>an</strong>y<br />
fear, but with expert help, dive <strong>in</strong>to the big blue: love at<br />
first sight is <strong>in</strong>evitable.<br />
