The adv<strong>an</strong>tage <strong>of</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior is that it<br />

Written by: Aurelija Vukušiæ<br />
Although the majority <strong>of</strong> today’s <strong>in</strong>teriors is decorated<br />
<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imalist style, on occasions one may<br />
come across homes that surprise us with the beauty<br />
<strong>of</strong> classical details that when united with<br />
m<strong>in</strong>imalist simplicity create <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g game <strong>of</strong> the old<br />
<strong>an</strong>d the new. I take the biggest pleasure <strong>in</strong> design<strong>in</strong>g such<br />
<strong>in</strong>teriors – says designer Lea Avi<strong>an</strong>i, that graduated design<br />
studies on the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Architecture <strong>in</strong> Zagreb <strong>an</strong>d s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
then she successfully dedicated herself to her great passion<br />
– <strong>in</strong>terior design. The <strong>in</strong>terior <strong>of</strong> one apartment <strong>in</strong> Split is <strong>an</strong><br />
example <strong>of</strong> that k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g space design, where timeless<br />
classic successfully comb<strong>in</strong>es with modern approach. It is<br />
now hard to imag<strong>in</strong>e this space ever lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> light, but<br />
with <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> the space, primarily by tear<strong>in</strong>g down<br />
all the unnecessary walls <strong>an</strong>d by convert<strong>in</strong>g the w<strong>in</strong>dows<br />
<strong>in</strong>to larger glass surfaces the designer opened the way for<br />
the light to get <strong>in</strong>side merg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that way the space <strong>an</strong>d<br />
the nature. What particularly st<strong>an</strong>ds out <strong>in</strong> the work <strong>of</strong> this<br />
designer from Split is the need for bigger open spaces <strong>an</strong>d<br />
complete communication <strong>of</strong> all parts <strong>of</strong> the liv<strong>in</strong>g space.<br />
- Frequent neglect <strong>of</strong> this almost essential need for cosy<br />
hous<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> pil<strong>in</strong>g up pieces <strong>of</strong> furniture that smother<br />
us leads to stumbl<strong>in</strong>g, feel<strong>in</strong>g entrapped <strong>an</strong>d unpleas<strong>an</strong>t.<br />
Therefore a home needs to be pl<strong>an</strong>ned as a place<br />
where one may move freely so <strong>in</strong> that sense <strong>in</strong>terventions<br />
<strong>in</strong> the arr<strong>an</strong>gement <strong>of</strong> rooms <strong>an</strong>d placement <strong>of</strong> furniture<br />
are <strong>of</strong>ten necessary – expla<strong>in</strong>s Lea. As <strong>an</strong> alternative to<br />
heavy <strong>an</strong>d closed walls <strong>in</strong> the apartment <strong>in</strong> Split the designer<br />
used “semi-open” walls with big niches that create<br />
the function <strong>of</strong> partition walls, but keep the impression <strong>of</strong><br />
one space <strong>an</strong>d perfectly fit <strong>in</strong> as a “frame” for emphasis<strong>in</strong>g<br />
all we desire to accentuate.<br />
Light colours on the walls <strong>an</strong>d on the basic furniture br<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
the fore classical details that dom<strong>in</strong>ate the space. The contrast<br />
created by white <strong>an</strong>d rich dark colours <strong>of</strong> the wood<br />
that accentuates the value <strong>an</strong>d signific<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> the “classic”<br />
is completely bal<strong>an</strong>ced so the apartment seems aired<br />
<strong>an</strong>d relaxed, but at the same time eleg<strong>an</strong>t, sophisticated<br />
<strong>an</strong>d valuable. The adv<strong>an</strong>tage <strong>of</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior is that it<br />
takes the best out <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imalism like simplicity <strong>an</strong>d functionality,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d completes it with classical details giv<strong>in</strong>g the space<br />
a timeless value – says Lea Avi<strong>an</strong>i, emphasis<strong>in</strong>g that it is<br />
not possible to furnish every space <strong>in</strong> every style, although<br />
some do not always completely take that <strong>in</strong>to account. Today<br />
it is very simple <strong>an</strong>d f<strong>in</strong><strong>an</strong>cially not overly dem<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to furnish a room <strong>in</strong> this style. Furnish<strong>in</strong>g this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior<br />
c<strong>an</strong> completely absorb you but also give your liv<strong>in</strong>g space<br />
a touch <strong>of</strong> your own special style that is unusual <strong>an</strong>d different,<br />
