Home as <strong>an</strong> Oasis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Light <strong>an</strong>d Harmony<br />

Feng shui, thous<strong>an</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> years old Ch<strong>in</strong>ese skill <strong>of</strong> harmoniz<strong>in</strong>g space <strong>in</strong> order to harmonize<br />

life is a number <strong>of</strong> simple rules that are based on the natural flow <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g energy. Numerous<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> home are recognised as feng shui although they are mostly done <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctively<br />

with the basic dem<strong>an</strong>d be<strong>in</strong>g – sufficient light<br />

Light, along with water <strong>an</strong>d food, is the basic necessity<br />

<strong>of</strong> life. The feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> energy loss is always<br />

more <strong>in</strong>tense dur<strong>in</strong>g cold <strong>an</strong>d cloudy days, when<br />

the sky rem<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> lead. The sunlight as well as the<br />

open airy sky make us vivacious <strong>an</strong>d ready for life. However,<br />

too much light as too much dark c<strong>an</strong> be wrong.<br />

The bal<strong>an</strong>ced relationship between light <strong>an</strong>d dark bal<strong>an</strong>ces<br />

our bodily functions too, consequently, it bal<strong>an</strong>ces<br />

our emotional, <strong>in</strong>tel-<br />

lectual <strong>an</strong>d spiritual life.<br />

That is how the nature works<br />

but what about our <strong>in</strong>teriors,<br />

places to live, study<br />

<strong>an</strong>d play? Does the play <strong>of</strong><br />

light <strong>an</strong>d dark <strong>in</strong> our <strong>in</strong>teriors<br />

make us recognize <strong>an</strong>d<br />

reveal what we really are?<br />

These <strong>an</strong>d other <strong>in</strong>terior design issues are dealt with by<br />

Feng Shui, thous<strong>an</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> years old Ch<strong>in</strong>ese skill <strong>of</strong> harmoniz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g space with the goal <strong>of</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

same <strong>in</strong> life.<br />

Recognizable symbols for y<strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong>d y<strong>an</strong>g energy represent<br />

completion <strong>an</strong>d bal<strong>an</strong>ce between two contrast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

energies (light-dark, hard-s<strong>of</strong>t, loud-quiet, sweetsalty).Y<strong>in</strong><br />

energy refers to darkness while y<strong>an</strong>g energy<br />

me<strong>an</strong>s light. Darkness has <strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong>fset <strong>of</strong> light <strong>an</strong>d lightness<br />

has <strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong>fset <strong>of</strong> darkness. Generally speak<strong>in</strong>g, spaces<br />

that are too dark, i.e. with too much y<strong>in</strong> energy could<br />

All objects that are not used should be removed.<br />

If there are blenders, toasters that need fix<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or pots that are not used, chipped cups no one<br />

likes to dr<strong>in</strong>k from, they are also <strong>an</strong> obstacle for<br />

lett<strong>in</strong>g the light <strong>in</strong>, no matter if they are <strong>in</strong>side<br />

cab<strong>in</strong>ets or not<br />

Interiors<br />

cause depression <strong>an</strong>d the loss <strong>of</strong> vitality. On the other<br />

h<strong>an</strong>d, too much y<strong>an</strong>g energy <strong>in</strong> the space, i.e. lightness,<br />

could lead to the lack <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>timacy <strong>an</strong>d irritability.<br />

Spaces we spend our time <strong>in</strong> require adequate light<strong>in</strong>g<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to the function <strong>of</strong> a room. Org<strong>an</strong>iz<strong>in</strong>g rooms<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong> apartment <strong>in</strong> a way that the natural light follows<br />

<strong>an</strong>d supports everyday activities is <strong>of</strong>ten unreachable<br />

<strong>ideal</strong>. Traditional Feng Shui recommends the kitchen to<br />

be oriented east, the liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

room <strong>in</strong> the south <strong>an</strong>d the<br />

bedroom fac<strong>in</strong>g the west<br />

side. The kitchen <strong>in</strong> the east<br />

is illum<strong>in</strong>ated by morn<strong>in</strong>g sun<br />

<strong>of</strong> rise <strong>an</strong>d development. It<br />

is assumed that precisely <strong>in</strong><br />

the kitchen the active part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the day starts by prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>an</strong>d meals that the energy <strong>of</strong> the ris<strong>in</strong>g sun<br />

will support spont<strong>an</strong>eously. The liv<strong>in</strong>g room should face<br />

the south s<strong>in</strong>ce our daily activities will be supported by<br />

the energy <strong>of</strong> the sun at its peak. The bedroom oriented<br />

towards west is excellent solution because the sun<br />

energy itself is ready for bedtime.<br />

The entr<strong>an</strong>ce to the apartment is connected with east<br />

side because it represents the entr<strong>an</strong>ce to a space <strong>in</strong>side<br />

<strong>of</strong> which the life grows <strong>an</strong>d becomes ennobled.<br />

It is the entr<strong>an</strong>ce that the Feng Shui deals with <strong>in</strong> detail.<br />

Let the entr<strong>an</strong>ce be lum<strong>in</strong>ous! Feng Shui does not<br />
