<strong>SHERIN</strong> <strong>AMINOSSEHE</strong>Sherin Aminossehe is Vice President for the planning team in HOK Londonand has worked extensively in urban regeneration projects across the UK,Europe, Russia and the Middle East. She actively contributes to thearchitectural press, was an editorial board member of Urban DesignQuarterly and is currently an advisor to the coalition.<strong>PETER</strong> <strong>BISHOP</strong>Peter trained in town planning at Manchester University and has spent hisentire career working in London. Over the past 20 years he has been aplanning director in four central London boroughs and has worked on majorprojects including Canary Wharf, the development of the BBC’s campus atWhite City and the Kings Cross developments, one of the largest and mostcomplex sites in London. He was appointed as the first Director of Designfor London, the Mayor’s architecture and design studio, in 2006. In 2008 hewas appointed Group Director at the London Development Agency. In thisrole he combined Design for London with the Agency’s land development,environmental, housing and public space programmes. In December 2009he was appointed the Deputy Chief Executive at the London DevelopmentAgency. Peter lectures and teaches extensively, is a visiting professor at thefaculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Nottingham TrentUniversity, is an advisor to the City of Bucharest and an honorary fellow ofUniversity College London.<strong>SAMANTHA</strong> <strong>BRASH</strong>Samantha has worked for HSBC across a number of roles including digitalmarketing and segmentation. Her current role is within the UK CustomerExperience team where she is focused on researching emerging consumertrends to identify the future banking landscape to ensure propositions arefuture-proofed and drive innovation throughout the business. Prior to rolesat HSBC, Samantha has worked in marketing roles with KPMG and Deloitte.She graduated in Business and Hispanic studies from the University ofBirmingham. Her course involved spending a year living in Guadalajara,Mexico which is where her love for Latin-American culture was born.


GRANT BROOKERGrant Brooker (BA(Hons) Dip Arch RIBA AHKIA) is Design Director at DesignGroup 1. He studied at the Canterbury School of Architecture and joinedFoster Associates in 1987. He has since been responsible for a large numberof built projects in Europe and South East Asia, including leading the designteam for Hong Kong International Airport in 1992. He currently leads agroup of some 100 architects involved in a wide range of cultural, office,airport and residential projects.ELEONORA CERVELLERAEleonora is a Senior Public Affairs Consultant at Buro Happold. Chip is a Fellowof the American Society of Landscape Architects, serves on HOK’s Board ofDirectors and Design Board, as well as the ASLA CEO Roundtable, and isPresident-Elect of the Board of the Landscape Architecture Foundation.With all his prestigious experience both in the US and countries around theworld, it’s his humility, generosity and openness that resonates with his coworkers,clients and colleagues. His motivation is to do the right thing; forhis profession, the environment, his employees and his clients. Chip is theperpetrator of many catchphrases, such as ‘it’s the HOK effect,’ ‘orbit thehairball,’ and ‘keep on jammin’,’ which are fondly referred to as ‘Chipisms.’His ability to inspire no doubt derives from his passionate commitment tothe environment, great design and community responsibility.


JULIET DAVISJuliet Davis is Cities Programme Fellow, and a chartered member of theRIBA (2005). She was previously a Senior Lecturer in Architecture andInteriors at the Canterbury School of Architecture (2005-07), ran the firstyear of the BA (Hons) Architecture course at Cambridge University (2004-05) and was a Visiting Lecturer at Cambridge (2006-1010). Between 1999and 2005 she worked as Project Architect with Eric Parry Architects. Hercurrent research at the Cities Programme investigates the intersectionsbetween political and spatial visions in the development of proposals for anurban regeneration Legacy to the 2012 Olympic Games in east London.Recent publications focus on topics and processes of urban regeneration,the construction of sustainable communities and the design of urbancatalysts.MIKE DUFFMike Duff (BSc, MSc (City Design & Social Science), MA (Sustainability &Design)) is an Associate working on Urban & Regional Planning and StrategicEnvironment projects for Happold Consulting International. He holds aBachelor’s degree in Social Psychology & Philosophy, and two Mastersdegrees in City Design & Social Science, and Sustainability and Architectural& Urban Design. He has worked on projects at all scales, from public realmstrategies and design codes to masterplans, strategic advice and city andregional structure plans. With Happold Consulting Mike’s work has includeddeveloping a Strategic Plan for the growth of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, thedesign of the urban blocks for an environmentally-sustainable universitycampus in Jordan, the environmental and heritage conservation of a seriesof historic mud brick towns in Addiriyah, Saudi Arabia, a masterplan for twonew eco-cities (USA, and Middle East), and a variety of project SustainabilityAssessments and Frameworks. His work for Happold Consulting has almostalways involved the development and specification of computational toolsfor planning, masterplanning and sustainability. He is currently working onstrategic planning projects in Detroit - USA, Maputo - Mozambique, andguest lectures at Harvard University, University College London, and theLondon School of Economics.CLIVE DUTTONClive Dutton OBE is Executive Director for Regeneration, Planning andProperty, London Borough of Newham; host Borough to the 2012 Olympicand Paralympic Games. The development platform in this part of EastLondon is a third of the size of Manhattan Island and is the Mayor ofLondon’s regeneration priority for the foreseeable future. Prior to this hewas Director of Planning and Regeneration at Birmingham City Council from2005 to 2009 and directed a dramatic regeneration programme within thecity, unprecedented in its recent history, and before this he was Director ofRegeneration at JJ Gallagher Limited and Head of Regeneration for fourlocal authorities. He has been Chief Executive of Tipton City Challenge andGeneral Manager of the Black Country Urban Development Corporation. Inaddition he worked for Government on the Urban Task Force, Urban WhitePaper and the Oldham Independent Review, following the civil disturbancesin 2001, and was Chairman of the Deputy Prime Minister’s AnnualSustainable Communities Award and a non-executive director of the BritishUrban Regeneration Association for three years in the early 1990s. He hasbeen a member of the BURA Best Practice Committee since it inception,and was awarded the OBE in 1998 for services to urban regeneration.


TIM FENDLEYTim Fendley founded Applied Information Group to push the boundaries ofinformation design. A central focus is making cities more understandable byproviding useful information, evidenced by projects in London, Glasgow,Brighton, Dublin and Vancouver. Tim’s work draws on his cultural andcommercial experience in environmental, editorial, identity and interactivedesign for clients such as Bosch, Ferrari, Graphics International, Gilbert &George, Glasgow 1999, Orange and Lexus. Tim was the lead designer of theBristol Legible City initiative. He has a passion for cities and mapping and amethodology that encompasses diagnostic testing in real situations mixedwith product design prototyping techniques. Tim’s recent interest has beento make sense of London, by initiating and leading the design of LegibleLondon, a capital-wide pedestrian wayfinding scheme, currently in pilotphase. When it is complete, it will be the most extensive of its kind in theworld.JOHN GALLAGHERJohn Gallagher is a journalist and author whose new book, ReimaginingDetroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City, was listed by theHuffington Post as among the best social and political books of 2010. Bornin New York City, John attended DePaul University in Chicago and ColumbiaUniversity in New York. He joined the Detroit Free Press newspaper in 1987to write about urban and economic redevelopment efforts, a position hestill holds. His other books include Great Architecture of Michigan and asco-author, AIA Detroit: The American Institute of Architects Guide to DetroitArchitecture. John and his wife, Sheu-Jane Gallagher, live in Detroit alongthe city's east riverfront.PIERS GOUGHPiers Gough founded CZWG in 1975 with his partners. From early on thepractice built up a reputation for bold, imaginative architecture covering abroad spectrum of development and building types including schools,residential, offices and hotels, ranging in size from large scale urbanregeneration projects to the individual house and exhibition design.Principal buildings include China Wharf, Cascades and many subsequentbuildings in London’s Docklands; Clerkenwell, Soho and Bankside Lofts; TheGreen Bridge, The Glass Building in Camden; Westbourne Grove publictoilet and The Bling Bling building in Liverpool. Piers has lecturedextensively in Europe, North and South America, Australia and China. Hehas taught at Middlesex Polytechnic and the Architectural AssociationSchool and has been a visiting professor at both the Mackintosh School inGlasgow and the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology.He was appointed a CBE for services to architecture in 1998 and elected aRoyal Academician in 2002. He is currently a Commissioner of CABE.


MICHAEL HAMMONDMichael is co-founder of World Architecture News and has been editorsince its inception in 2005 to its current position as the largest supplier ofnews and information to the global architectural community. Michael isalso presenter of This Week, WAN’s weekly podcast which has featuredinterviews with many of the world’s leading architects. Michael is alsochairman of the WAN AWARDS jury panel. Prior to WAN he worked as afreelance architectural journalist for the Architects’ Journal, Blueprint,Highlife and is author of a book, Performing Architecture, published byMerrell in 2006.DR GEORGE HAZEL OBEDr Hazel is Chairman of MRC McLean Hazel Ltd, a consultancy specialising inproviding transport and urban development advice, concepts and solutionsfor the public and private sectors. He is an Adjunct Professor at QueenslandUniversity of Technology, past Chair of the National Advisory Forum ofTransport 2000’s Reclaiming Main Roads Initiative, was a member of theLorry Road User Charging Advisory Group and an Advisor to Transport2000’s Policy Council and the Commission for Integrated Transport inLondon. He specialises in strategic urban and transport studies and his workincludes the book Making Cities Work and the Megacities Report forSiemens launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2007. He is anInternational Advisor to the MMM Group working in various countries. Hegraduated in 1971 in Civil Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, andremains a Chartered Civil Engineer. He also holds an MSc in Transportationand a PhD in the Traffic Impact of Large Retail Developments.DONALD HYSLOPDonald Hyslop is Director of Regeneration and Community Partnerships,Tate Galleries, London. He has worked for over twenty years in the culturesector in the UK. His work is at the forefront of exploring and developingmodels for the role culture can play in the regeneration and economicdevelopment of cities and communities. He works extensively in thecultural, tourism and business sectors both in UK and internationally. Thisincludes acting as an advisor on cultural policy development and makingconnections with wider contexts including business improvement districts,architecture, urban planning and the built environment. He is a member ofthe senior client teams delivering the Tate Modern project andTransforming Tate Britain. His lectures, teaching and writing reflect hiscentral motivation to develop the meaningful role that museums, artistsand creative practitioners have to play in our everyday lives in an everincreasing variety of places, spaces and situations.SARAH ICHIOKASarah Ichioka is Director of the Architecture Foundation and a Co-Directorof the London Festival of Architecture. She chaired the advisory panel forthe 2010 British Pavilion at Venice and has served on juries including theEuropean Prize for Urban Public Space and the UK Young Architect of theYear Award. Ichioka was consultant curator for the exhibition Global Citiesat Tate Modern and Exhibition Content Coordinator for the 10th VeniceArchitecture Biennale. Ichioka was a founding research associate of theUrban Age, an interdisciplinary project investigating the future of globalcities, and a Community Development Fellow at New York City’sDepartment of Housing Preservation and Development.


MICHAEL JOHNSONMichael Johnson runs Johnson Banks, which has long had an interest inbranding the four ‘C’s – cities, countries, culture and charities. He’s workedon many projects for the British Government, art centres in Philadelphiaand Paris, a space observatory in Japan and bilingual typeface in China. InLondon, he’s just done the Science Museum and his first airline, VirginAtlantic. Johnson Banks branded London’s inward investment arm ‘ThinkLondon’, and writes and lectures worldwide on identity issues. He has wonmost of the design world’s most prestigious awards, has written one book,Problem Solved, and is working on two others. In spare moments he editsthe design blog, Thought for the Week.PADRAIC KELLYPadraic Kelly (BA, BAI, MSc, FICE, FIStructE, FRSA) is a Chartered Engineer,Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, Fellow of the Institution ofCivil Engineers and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, holdingBachelor and Masters degrees in Engineering from Trinity College, Dublin.He joined the parent company Buro Happold in 1978, became a Director in1992 responsible for Middle East and Asia, and returned to the UK tobecome Managing Director in 1996. He held this key role until 2005 afterwhich he became the practice’s International Director. He has beenPresident of Europengineers since May 2006. He established HappoldConsulting in 2005. Padraic has played leading roles in large scale planningand infrastructure, transport and environment projects. He lectures onplanning at Harvard University and has co-founded ‘The Working Group onSustainable Cities’ there.DAN KINKEADDan Kinkead is an architect and associate at Hamilton Anderson Associates(HAA), a multidisciplinary design firm based in Detroit. Dan works onseveral local, regional and international design projects, and is the planningand design leader of the Detroit Works Project planning team. Beforejoining Hamilton Anderson, Dan worked in Skidmore Owings & Merrill’sNew York design office working on international projects and collaboratingwith the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Dan received his Bachelor ofArchitecture from the University of Kentucky and Master of Architecture inUrban Design from Harvard University. Dan is also a part-time adjunctinstructor in Architectural History and Theory in Wayne State University’sUrban Studies program. He works and lives in Detroit.MATT LEACHMatt Leach is associate director of ResPublica and Head of Health, Housingand Environment Unit. Prior to joining ResPublica, Matt has held a range ofsenior policy and leadership roles at the interface between state and notfor-profitsectors, including as Chief Executive of Capacitybuilders andDirector of Policy and Communications at the Housing Corporation, andplayed a leading role in the establishment of the London Thames GatewayDevelopment Corporation and the Greater London Authority. Matt has astrong interest in practical approaches to building the strength ofcommunities at a local level, and is a Board member of the Accord Groupand of Caldmore Area Housing Association.


FRED MANSON OBEFred Manson is the former Director of Regeneration and Environment atthe London Borough of Southwark 1994-2001, where he oversaw economicdevelopment, planning, property management, environmentalmanagement, regeneration, leisure and community services. In one of hiskey contributions during this period, Fred identified and presented the casefor cultural investment and regeneration on London’s South Bank riverfrontage. He initiated financial support for the redevelopment of BanksidePower Station into the Tate Modern and oversaw the planning applicationprocess for the borough including public and stakeholder consultation. Theoutcome, Tate Modern, is the most popular art museum in the world with5.25m visitors in its first year alone. Fred has also been an advisor to theDesign Museum in the early stages of the building’s transformation. In2004, Fred was selected as part of the Mayor of London’s Urban DesignAdvisory Panel to identify key opportunities for cultural and commercialdevelopment within the city. Outside of these duties, Fred is a trustee ofLondon Open House and the Foundation for Allergy Information andResearch. In 2000 he was awarded an honorary OBE..DAVID MARKSDavid Marks MBE FRSA RIBA co-founded Marks Barfield Ltd with JuliaBarfield in 1989. In 1994 they founded the London Eye Company andremained directors and shareholders until 2006. In 2000 David was madean MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours List and received the PrincePhilip Special Commendation for Outstanding Achievement in Design forBusiness and Society. In 2001 he was awarded the Faculty of BuildingTrophy for outstanding work in the field of construction. From 2002 to 2007David was Chairman of the Waterloo Project Board, a regenerationprogramme in London SE1. In 2007 he was elected a Fellow of the RSA.SHARON MCHUGHMs. McHugh is an architect, planner and design educator. Based inPrinceton, NJ and New York City, she divides her time between professionaldesign pursuits and writing about architecture and urbanism. She currentlyserves as the US Correspondent for World Architecture News and Abitareand is the former US editor of the RIBA’s now defunct World Architecturemagazine. She is also on the nominating committee for the Cooper HewittMuseum’s National Design Awards. Sharon holds Masters degrees in CityPanning and Historic Preservation (Architecture) from the University ofPennsylvania and a Certificate in Architectural Conservation from theICCROM in Rome, Italy. She has received numerous awards including anAmerican Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award for Excellence inArchitecture (2004) for a pavilion for Cornell West, an AIA Smart GrowthAward (2005), and an AIA NJ Design Award (1991). In 1995, Sharon washonoured with the Young Architects Award from the Architectural Leagueof New York.


HUGH MULCAHY<strong>PETER</strong> MURRAYPeter Murray trained as an architect but has spent his career in thecommunication of architecture. He is Chairman of the design andcommunications consultancy Wordsearch, founder and Chairman of NewLondon Architecture (NLA), Founder/Director of the London Festival ofArchitecture and editor in chief of London Quarterly magazine. He wasformerly technical editor of Architectural Design (AD) and then Editor of theweekly newspaper Building Design. He then moved to be Editor andPublisher of the RIBA Journal. In 1983 he started Blueprint Magazine, thefirst of the new wave of design and architecture magazines that charted therise of the creative industries. He has curated a number of majorarchitectural exhibitions.COLLETTE O’SHEAColette is Head of Development for the Land Securities London Portfolio,responsible for the largest live development programme in London.Projects include the recently completed One New Change - a landmarkretail and office building designed by Jean Nouvel adjacent to St Paul’sCathedral, 20 Fenchurch Street, a City tower designed by Rafael Vinoly, ParkHouse on Oxford Street, and Selborne House in Victoria designed by PelliClark. Other activities include securing planning consents for mixed useschemes such as Arundel Great Court on the River Thames, the VTIregeneration project at Victoria and 30 Old Bailey, another site in theproximity of St Paul’s Cathedral. Colette manages a large residentialdevelopment programme including Wellington House currently onsite inVictoria. Colette is responsible for the Environmental, CorporateResponsibility, Leasing, Residential Sales, and Marketing activities for theLondon Portfolio.


DAN PHILLIPSDan Phillips (FRSA, MSt (cantab) BEng (acgi)) is group director ofsustainability at Buro Happold. He trained as a mechanical engineer atImperial College, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has a Mastersdegree in interdisciplinary design for the built environment from CambridgeUniversity. He started his career at Ford Motor Company followed by 8years at Arup's in London and Africa. His professional passion is innovationand sustainable development and he believes that we will achieve thisthrough constantly improving the relationship people have with our builtand natural environment, the systems and tools we use to operate ourbuildings, cities and organisations and the quality of the built environmentitself. Previously he ran a design and innovation company called the SEA,and was also the creative director at Battle McCarthy Engineers. He is acreative communicator and thinker having lectured in environmental designand published a book on Eco-friendly homes for Harper Collins.ADAM POOLEAdam Poole works in the strategy team at Buro Happold. He trained as anAfricanist and used to run an African affairs consultancy but got deflectedinto the built environment by a coup. Before joining Buro Happold heworked for 10 years as an ideas consultant for universities, designers,contractors, politicians and research organisations.PROFESSOR JOHN RATCLIFFEJohn Ratcliffe is professor of Strategic Foresight at The Henley BusinessSchool, University of Reading and Visiting Professor of Built EnvironmentFutures at the University Salford. For fifteen years or more, ProfessorRatcliffe has acquired a particular expertise and reputation in the FuturesStudies field, with special reference to real estate strategy and thesustainable development of city regions. In 2003 he established The FuturesAcademy, which has acted as a research and consultancy practice tocountries, cities, corporations, colleges and communities around the world.From 2005 to 2007 he was the elected Secretary-General of the WorldFutures Studies Federation, the global body for academic futurists, and he iscurrently Vice President of the European Futurists Conference, the regionalorganisation for professional futurists. He is also a Consultant to ShapingTomorrow, and an Associate of the futures consultancy Outsights in the UK.LAWRIE ROBERTSONLawrie Robertson (MA (Hons) Dip Arch ARB RIBA) is a strategic planner,urban designer and architect with experience in city and building design,planning and international humanitarian development. He joined HappoldConsulting in 2006 and is now Associate Director, leading onmultidisciplinary strategic planning, urban development and infrastructureprojects. He trained at Cambridge University Architecture Department andbuilt up experience in both architecture and urban design with practices inLondon, Prague and Budapest. Recently, he has led the strategic plan forJeddah, Saudi Arabia as well as the Masterplan for Addiriyah, Saudi Arabia'srecent addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List.


MIKE SIMPSONMike Simpson began his career with Philips in 1977, working in thecompany’s lighting lab after graduating from South Bank University with aBSc Hons in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He undertook numeroustechnical and design roles and was responsible for external lighting projectsincluding; Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and Blackpool’s Pepsi-Maxroller coaster. In 2003 he became the Technical and Design Director PhilipsLighting UK. His expertise has been valuable on projects including thelighting of Buckingham Palace, The O2 as well as urban street lightingdesigns and consumer lighting applications. In May 2009, Mike wasappointed President of CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building ServicesEngineers). With over 30 years of experience in lighting Mike advises theGovernment on energy policy making. Additionally, he has been involved inthe preparation of international lighting standards and has presented manypapers at national and international lighting conferences. Mike is currentlya guest lecturer on the MSc in Light and Architecture at the Bartlett Schoolof Architecture and on the BA in Lighting Design at Rose Bruford College,Sidcup.DAVID WESTDavid is Principal Urban Designer and a founding director of Studio EgretWest, and a planner and urban designer specialising in urban visions andstrategic framework plans. David has worked on a number of diverseprojects all over the world. At Atkins, he worked on large-scale masterplansin China, Portugal, Abu Dhabi and Brazil. Then at Alsop Architects, heestablished and led the ‘Big Architecture’ team, formulating radical urbanstrategies that challenged conventional thinking about places. Having set upStudio Egret West with Christophe Egret in 2004, David has pursued apassion for delivering place-specific strategies and solutions. David sits onthe CABE London 2012 Design Review Panel, the ‘Design for London’ UrbanDesign Panel and the RIBA Building Futures Steering Group.PAUL WILCOCKA director in Davis Langdon's Mixed Use Masterplanning Group, Paul isdelighted to be able to contribute to this study and will bring his significantexperience of major mixed-use masterplan commissions around the world.These include the multi award-winning Liverpool One scheme in the UK, theSahl Hasheesh Resort in Egypt and the Abuja Technology Village Free Zonein Nigeria. His main emphasis is on the economic challenges andopportunities that drive the successful design and implementation of suchschemes. These invariably relate to the delivery of infrastructure in such away that is practicable and viable and the need to approach such schemes,recognising the inevitable change that will occur over their life-span.


MARJA M. WINTERSA proud Detroit native, Marja M. Winters grew up on Detroit’s west side ina family that instilled the values of civic engagement, social responsibility,love of God, and determination to achieve any goal. On May 14, 2009,Mayor Dave Bing reappointed Marja Deputy Director of the City of DetroitPlanning and Development Department. In this capacity, she oversees theoperations of nearly 200 employees who staff the department’s sixdivisions. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the DetroitEconomic Development Corporation and Co-Director of The Detroit WorksProject. Appointed Director of the Mayor’s Office of NeighborhoodCommercial Revitalization (ONCR) in March 2006, Marja worked withcommunity development organizations, volunteers, entrepreneurs and localmerchants to revitalize older neighborhood commercial districts in targetedareas and encouraged small business creation and growth throughout theCity of Detroit. Marja is a current student of The Urban Ministry Institute, agraduate of the University of Michigan and holds a B.A. in Political Scienceand a Master of Urban Planning.JESS ZIMBABWEJess Zimbabwe serves as the Executive Director of the Urban Land InstituteDaniel Rose Center for Public Leadership in Land Use. Previously, shedirected the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, helping 125 American mayorsbetter understand their impact on the fabric of their cities. She also servedas the Community Design Director at Urban Ecology in San Francisco,providing pro bono community planning and design assistance to lowincomeneighbourhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a licensedarchitect, certified city planner, and a LEED-Accredited professional.
