MIKE SIMPSONMike Simpson began his career with Philips in 1977, working in thecompany’s lighting lab after graduating from South Bank University with aBSc Hons in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He undertook numeroustechnical and design roles and was responsible for external lighting projectsincluding; Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and Blackpool’s Pepsi-Maxroller coaster. In 2003 he became the Technical and Design Director PhilipsLighting UK. His expertise has been valuable on projects including thelighting of Buckingham Palace, The O2 as well as urban street lightingdesigns and consumer lighting applications. In May 2009, Mike wasappointed President of CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building ServicesEngineers). With over 30 years of experience in lighting Mike advises theGovernment on energy policy making. Additionally, he has been involved inthe preparation of international lighting standards and has presented manypapers at national and international lighting conferences. Mike is currentlya guest lecturer on the MSc in Light and Architecture at the Bartlett Schoolof Architecture and on the BA in Lighting Design at Rose Bruford College,Sidcup.DAVID WESTDavid is Principal Urban Designer and a founding director of Studio EgretWest, and a planner and urban designer specialising in urban visions andstrategic framework plans. David has worked on a number of diverseprojects all over the world. At Atkins, he worked on large-scale masterplansin China, Portugal, Abu Dhabi and Brazil. Then at Alsop Architects, heestablished and led the ‘Big Architecture’ team, formulating radical urbanstrategies that challenged conventional thinking about places. Having set upStudio Egret West with Christophe Egret in 2004, David has pursued apassion for delivering place-specific strategies and solutions. David sits onthe CABE London 2012 Design Review Panel, the ‘Design for London’ UrbanDesign Panel and the RIBA Building Futures Steering Group.PAUL WILCOCKA director in Davis Langdon's Mixed Use Masterplanning Group, Paul isdelighted to be able to contribute to this study and will bring his significantexperience of major mixed-use masterplan commissions around the world.These include the multi award-winning Liverpool One scheme in the UK, theSahl Hasheesh Resort in Egypt and the Abuja Technology Village Free Zonein Nigeria. His main emphasis is on the economic challenges andopportunities that drive the successful design and implementation of suchschemes. These invariably relate to the delivery of infrastructure in such away that is practicable and viable and the need to approach such schemes,recognising the inevitable change that will occur over their life-span.
