The Essa Healthy CommunityCommitteeThe Township’s Healthy Community Committee (HCC) was established inSeptember of 2011 with its first official meeting in January, 2012. The HCC iscomprised of 12 residents representing many community interests – agriculture,planning, health, recreation, the environment, history and youth to name a few. ItsVision is “Essa is a community where Town and Country live and grow together inhealth, prosperity and peace built upon its natural, agricultural and historic heritage”with a Mission to compliment this as follows:“To protect, preserve and enhance the natural, agricultural and historic resources of Essaby linking people and communities through involvement in the planning, promotion andcelebration of healthy and active lifestyles with a focus on the Nottawasaga River and associatedtributaries, access to local food, active transportation, safety, community revitalization, andenvironmental, agricultural and community sustainability.”In 2013 the HCC worked on a riverbank restoration project onthe Pine River to open up a canoe route with the added benefit ofoptimizing aquatic habitat and improving the assimilative capacity of thiswatercourse to accept phosphorus. More specifically, our team and manylocal volunteers anchored coniferous trees to the Pine River riverbank,accomplishing improved stream habitat and bank stabilization.For 2014, the HCC will be overseeing the preparation of a Trails MasterPlan created by the Township, to link the whole of the Township, all partsand beyond, with one another. Open Houses and a new website will be usedin the near future, as a means of collecting comments from the public andkey organizationsin the community.
