The History of the AngusHorticultural SocietyIn 1920 Angus became a PoliceVillage, in 1923 the Ontario ForestryTree Seed Plant was built, in 1926volunteers applied to the province to forma horticultural society. While waiting theycreated the Angus Community Park acrossfrom the Seed plant.In 1929 the “Angus HorticulturalSociety” was officially formed. Monthlymeetings were held at the Seed Plant.Some original members have descendantsstill living in Angus.During the 1930’s the Societyfundraised to purchase connecting landto the existing cemetery. Trees and brushwere cleared to create the “Angus UnionCemetery” located on Vernon Street.In 1937 members created a garden onCurtis Street to honour the Coronationof King George VI and Queen Elizabeth,parents of our present Queen. A UnionJack was raised, a dated stone laid, treesplanted and a WWI artillery gun wasplaced. Over years, the gun was sold andthe stone was lost. In 2002, the originalstone was found, re-dedicated and officiallynamed the “Old Stone” Garden. Someoriginal trees are still alive at this location.In 1938 the Society purchased landthrough fundraising and donations tobuild a War Memorial honouring residentswho died in WWI. The Cenotaph standstoday honouring all residents who died inwars.Since2000, the following gardens werecreated: Millennium Gardens, FarewellGardens, Clock Tower Gardens/Gazeboand Peace Gardens at the NottawasagaBridge. Eighteen Flowering Crab AppleTrees have been planted with our “Angel”fundraiser.Residents can be proud of their Angus Horticultural Society.
