EDITORIAL
The feature of the inaugural 2011 NEAFL northern conference season has
been the tightness of the competition, not just in premiership table placings,
but in results.
Anyone with a remote interest in the NEAFL knows the race for finals placings
has been hotly contested right through the opening 19 rounds and a
magnifi cent set of fi xtures await again this weekend.
But the general closeness of games has been what has really set this season
apart.
Broadbeach, the Brisbane Lions Reserves and Mt Gravatt have been involved
in the most heart-stoppers.
The Cats have played six matches for results of two goals or less, including
four by less than a goal. After three successive close losses by a combined
margin of 25 points, the Cats have made a play for a fi nals spot with fi vepoint
and one-point victories of two of the top three sides.
Meanwhile the Vultures have endured seven heart-stoppers of 13 points or
less, losing the fi rst three but winning the next four, the victories all by nine
points or less.
The Lions Reserves have the most unfortunate record of fi ve losses by 10
points or under and a draw last week against Morningside.
While the Lions will almost certainly ‘win’ their fi rst wooden spoon, their supporters
could quite rightly argue that they have been a far better combination
in 2011 than last season when they won two more games and fi nished
eighth.
The Lions lost 94, 95, 102 and 127 points last season – and beat the Western
Magpies by 187.
Just two matches in the entire 2011 season have recorded 100 point-plus
margins, and none since the June State bye.
The close competition is a credit to the club development managers and
respective coaching staff. It is also a tribute to the work of longtime QAFL
and NEAFL northern conference Operations Manager Marty King.
Marty resigned his post last week with the competition in wonderful shape
and he takes the thanks of all in ‘clubland’ and AFLQ with him for an outstanding
job done.
