LINE
Grand Final week has got to be the most exciting
time of the football season. It’s a time where the
teams involved are full of energy and enthusiasm
about the task at hand, and the rest of us wish we
were in their shoes.
against the Swans in 2011, Ainslie will be at full
strength and will fancy their chances after stretching
Sydney in Round 22.
For the Swans, they will be looking at closing out
what has been a very successful 2011 and will again
field some proven senior AFL players like Moore,
Seaby, Bevan and Everitt.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely
Good luck to all teams playing
today. The best and most
consistent teams have made the
Grand Final in all three grades.
The Under 18’s game promises so much, with the
Belconnen Magpies taking on proven finals performers
Marist. Marist has peaked at the right time
of year again, with the Magpies to field a number of
State Under 16’s players in their impressive line up.
The Division two game between Ainslie and
Queanbeyan should go right down to the wire if the
second semi final is anything to go by. Both teams
are very skilful and physical and have a number of
experienced senior players in their line ups.
The NEAFL Eastern Conference decider between
the Sydney Swans and Ainslie is going to be one
heck of a contest, with both teams a genuine chance
of taking out the title. Although unsuccessful
thank the official partners and suppliers of AFL
Canberra who have once again offered tremendous
support to the code in 2011. I would also like to
thank the clubs, and in particular the club Football
Managers for their great work this year. Also, a big
thank you to the Board and staff of AFL Canberra
who have got through a mountain of work this year
with a minimum of fuss.
Have a great day today and enjoy the game.
It was nearly six months ago when the new NEAFL competition started, and the
Sydney Swans Reserves have had a fantastic run this season. Leading goal
kicker Trent Dennis-lane reflects on a dominant season
Trent Dennis-Lane was one of the
Reserves’ standout’s in the forward
line kicking 65 goals in only 13
matches, and he knows that this
season was about preparing players
for their senior debut if they were ever
called upon.
This was the case with five Rteserves
players making their senior debuts
this year. Dennis-Lane puts the
number of debutants down the Swans
working towards the same goal of
creating an easy transition for all the
up and coming players into the senior
side.
“It is good because you get to learn all
the game plans and then when you
do make the transition up it is not as
hard as what I believe it would be,”
Dennis-Lane said.
Dennis-Lane made his Swans debut
in 2010 and impressed in eight games
last season, he has played three this
year with injuries hampering his run in
the senior side.
“I have had a few little niggles with an
ankle injury and a foot injury. This was
a little frustrating; obviously your form
drops off a little with injury. I think I
have had an inconsistent year, I kicked
a few goals but that is not all that they
are after,” Dennis-Lane said.
Dennis-Lane will be hoping that next
year will have better luck with injury
and to improve his physic in the pre
season.
“Personally I will be trying to get a bit
stronger and come back and make a
statement in the pre season, hopefully
I can play a few more senior games
next year,” Dennis-Lane said.
Reserves coach, Henry Playfair has
made an impact on the side in his
coaching season debut, Dennis-Lane
along with the Reserves players have
had praise for the former Swan turned
coach.
“He is really approachable and gets
along with all the guys really well.
He tells you how it is so you know
exactly where you stand with him
which makes it easier to improve,”
Dennis-Lane said.
The Swans Reserves
will face Ainslie in the
Eastern Conference of
the NEAFL this weekend
and Dennis-Lane admits
that the Canberra side
pushes the Reserves to
play a different style
of football when they
play each other.
“When ever we come up against
Ainslie it is quite tough because we
get restricted numbers due to the
rules. They are one of the strongest
sides in the Canberra competition and
they push us really hard,” Dennis-
Lane said.
While this will be the third time in four
weeks the two sides have faced each
other, Dennis-Lane and the Swans
Reserves are confident about their
performance in the Grand Final.
“I think we are pretty confident if we
make sure our defensive pressure
is up and take care of all of our
structures and we play football the
way we want to play it, we should
be able to run out winners on the
weekend.” Dennis-Lane said.
Best win of the season
“Our first win against the Gold Coast
obviously with them being another
AFL side, we played really well that
day we came out and we won by a 100
odd points,” Dennis-Lane said.
Worst loss of the
season
“The second (loss) was against GWS,
we started off alright but we ran out
of legs. We where low on numbers
and they where a lot more disciplined
than us, I think it came down to how
disciplined we where to sticking to
the team thing right and getting our
structures right which cost us that
day,” Dennis-Lane said.
Two stand out
performers
“Daniel Currie finished his season
early with injury, which was unlucky
because he was in some red-hot form
and is pretty close to knocking on the
door for a senior game. With Jarred
Moore you know exactly what you
are going to get with him week-in,
week-out,” Dennis-Lane said.

By Natasha Lorenz
we try to replicate
senior football, so
our guys make sure
they get the same
sort of structures
as the senior team
does. That way when
and if any players
got the call up, they
were ready to slot
straight into the
senior line up.
Whatever the result for 2010 PREMIERS Ainslie, their season will
be seen by the players and staff as a highly successful one.
TODAY’S gRAND FINAL SEES THEM TAKE ON THIS YEAR’tS
MOST CONSISTENT TEAM, THE SYDNEY SWANS.
Winning last year’s premiership
meant that the pressure was always
going to be on to defend their title and
be among the top teams.
The side easily lived up to the latter
part of these expectations and did
well to finish a very credible second at
the end of the regular season.
This was a one place improvement on
last year’s performance where they
finished third, which is all the more
impressive with the inclusion of the
GWS GIANTS for the NEAFL 2011
season.
Ainslie only lost four
games during the
regular season, and
because of the small
amount of losses, they
hurt that much more.
Coach Chris Rourke picked out Round
13’s loss to Southport as the club’s
worst performance of the year in
what was Ainslie’s first match against
a team from the sunshine state.
Ainslie lost the match 10.7-67 to
19.17-131 at home. As well as their
worst performance, it was also their
lowest score for the home and away
season, which shows just how off the
side was that day.
In true Ainslie fashion though the side
responded in the best possible way,
with a victory the following week in
Queensland that Rourke rated as the
best during the regular season.
In round 14 Ainslie travelled to
Queensland on the back of that
64-point drubbing, knowing that they
needed to respond to prove that they
could match it with the Northern
Conference of the NEAFL.
They came up against Labrador at
their home ground, and delivered their
best victory for the season, winning
17.13-115 to 13.11-89.
The club’s ability to respond after a
loss has been a key factor in the 2011
run to the grand final.
Unless you include Ainslie’s loss to
West Adelaide in the FOXTEL Cup
during round three, the club has gone
through the whole season without
losing back-to-back games.
Ainslie only finished the regular
season one win above the GIANTS
in third place, with that one place
proving crucial as it gave Ainslie a
second chance in the finals.
After the bad start to the season
against Greater Western Sydney, the
team responded with a four match
winning streak that gave their season
the kick start it needed. However, that
was only a taste of what was to come
as that four game streak was bettered
by a seven match streak from Rounds
14 to 21.
That run of wins was started by the
previously mentioned win against the
Labrador Tigers and included wins
over all the Canberra teams.
This was made all the more
impressive as Ainslie’s 2011 list
unfortunately suffered a lot of injuries
throughout the season. This meant
that the 2010 premiership core of the
team was not able to play together
week-in week-out.
Therefore, it is no surprise both
standout performers nominated by
Chris Rourke are players who have
lifted their game from last year and
are now a major part of the teams
2011 premiership chances.
Rob Tuohey played fourteen matches
this year and has become a very
important part of the first team.
“Tuohey has taken his game to
another level this year and has shown
very good on-field leadership skills,”
Rourke said.
Another player that
Rourke wanted to
mention was Jesse
Griffin who has reinvented
himself from
a squad player in 2010,
to a 12 game player in
2011.“Jesse has gone
from a fringe player to
a very valuable member
of the team,” Rourke
said.
“He has the ability to hold down a key
position in the backline or pinch hit in
the ruck.”
No matter what the result in the final
at Manuka today, Ainslie have had a
very successful season.
The Sydney
Swans reserves
and Ainslie FC
will battle it
out for the
inaugural NEAFL
Eastern Conference
title.
The Swans have had a fantastic
season and have looked a
league above all year but what
will the grand final bring?
Ainslie will be looking to win
back-to-back flags and are
sure to be fully prepared by
Coach Chris Rourke; who was
recently named AFL (NSW/
ACT) Coach of the Year for
NSW/ACT. The Swans, who are
coached by former AFL player
Henry Playfair, are looking to
win their first flag since 2008.
THIS SEASON:
The Swans and Ainslie have
met three times this year with
the red and white coming away
with the victory on all three
occasions. The victories have
all been comprehensive with
the average winning margin
between the Swans and Ainslie
being 45-points. Ainslie has
had two weeks to think about
their last defeat to the Swans.
Key Players:
Sydney Swans
Jarred Moore
Joint Mulrooney Medal winner
Jarred Moore is sure to have
a vital role in the outcome of
the game. Having notched up
68 AFL games for the Swans,
Moore’s experience is sure
to be crucial on Grand Final
day. The on-baller gathered 13
votes in the final seven rounds
of the NEAFL competition
which allowed him to accept
the Mulrooney Medal alongside
teammate Daniel Currie. His
best on-ground performance
in the semi finals is sure to be
in the back of Ainslie’s mind.
Nathan Gordon
Gordon’s 2011 season has been
exemplary – a season that was
topped off his selection in the
NEAFL Eastern Conference
Team of the Year. Gordon
is coming into the grand
final with his kicking boots
cemented on following 15
goals in his last three games.
Gordon and the Swans will
be hoping his hot run of form
continues for one more match
as the Swans forwards look to
pepper the Ainslie defence.
Key Players:
Ainslie
Rob Shirley
The former Crow came to
Ainslie to win a flag and while
he won one last year, you can
bet he has the hunger to go
back-to-back with only the
Swans standing in his way you
can be sure he won’t let up.
Shirley has not only offered
Ainslie with an explosive
midfielder/ tagger in 2011
but his experienced head has
been a welcome addition to
the Tricolours side. Shirley
will be looking to bring all his
experience on Grand Final day
as Ainslie looks to knock off
the highly fancied Swans.
Ben Hughes
Ainslie’s leading goal shark
in 2011 will need to have his
kicking boots on if Ainslie are
any shot at winning backto-back
flags. Hughes’ third
place in the Mulrooney Medal
typified his importance to
Ainslie’s chances. Following
his selection in the NEAFL
Eastern Conference Team of
the Year, Hughes will be hoping
his midfield can get over the
top of the Swans and offer him
clean service.
Wildcards:
Sydney Swans
Mark Seaby
Having formally won an AFL
premiership with the West
Coast Eagles in 2006 Seaby
will be looking to add another
title to his credentials. Seaby
will be looking to continue
his excellent form not only in
the ruck but also up forward
where he kicked two goals
in the Swans last outing.
Having played over 100 AFL
games, Seaby will look to lead
the younger Swans around
Manuka Oval.
Kane Murphy
The Swans academy member
has shown a mature head this
year. Murphy’s stellar season
was acknowledged with
selection in the NEAFL Eastern
Conference team of the year.
Murphy will not only be looking
to gain big-match experience
but will be looking to make his
presence felt around Manuka
Oval. Murphy is coming into the
grand final with some excellent
form under his belt and has
been among the Swans best in
his last few matches.’
Wildcards:
AINSLIE
Eric Stone
Following his move from Box
Hill a few years ago Stone has
been one of the Tricolours
most consistent performers
and 2011 has been no different.
Stone was an integral part of
his side’s 2010 success and is
hoping to make it back-to-back
titles in 2011. Stone will look
to carry his experience onto
Manuka Oval when his side
battles with the Swans for the
NEAFL Eastern Conference
premiership.
Robert Tuohey
Tuohey has been an integral
part of the Ainslie defence in
2011 and was also selected in
the NEAFL Eastern Conference
Team of the Year. Tuohey will
have an important role on
Grand Final day as the Ainslie
defence looks to control the
rampaging Sydney forward
line. If Tuohey and his fellow
Ainslie defenders can keep the
Swans forwards in check then
expect the Tricolours to make
it back-to-back flags.
THIS SEASON
Round 9
Ainslie 11.8 – 74 def. by
Sydney Swans 18.16 - 124
Sydney Swans 16.14 – 110
2nd Semi
Sydney Swans 21.7 – 133
def. Ainslie 9.17 – 71
Prediction
The Swans reserves have had
a stellar season and look to
have last year’s AFL Canberra
champions covered across the
park. The result is not set in
stone and much bigger upsets
have happened in world sport
but for me it will be the Swans
who take the inaugural NEAFL
Eastern Conference.

HENRY PLAYFAIR
Hi Henry, You had the
weekend off last week
how did that go? What
was the training session
Saturday morning
like?
Yeah, we had a good solid 60
minute hit out on Saturday morning.
The boys had some quality
touches and we worked on things
that came out of the last time we
played Ainslie.
It’s pretty exciting
times ahead, what is
the mood like across
the camp?
It seems really good. The boys
have been really upbeat in their
training over the past few days
and are really looking forward to
the weekend.
You’ve won all your
games this year
against Ainslie, so how
do you make sure there
is no complacency this
weekend?
I’m really going to stress how
the game was a lot closer than
the score board reflected. Ainslie
were on top of us in a few key
areas so we really can’t rest
and take it easy. They also won
by 90-points on the weekend
so there is no way we will be
underestimating them.
What are the key
things you think your
team need to do on
Saturday to get the
win?
Certainly our pressure, skills and
our defensive structure are really
important to us, they let us down
a little bit last time we played
them, so we will be reinforcing
those but we won’t be changing
to much.
What do you think are
the key areas Ainslie
have a real strength
in?
Their midfield is really well
organised, they’ve got some
dangerous forwards and their
backs are pretty solid. Across the
park they are a pretty even outfit.
10

Chris Rourke
Congratulations on
making the Grand
Final, firstly you were
very convincing over
Eastlake last week
but this weekend it’s a
completely different
kettle of fish isn’t it?
Yeah, we were really pleased with
the way we played last weekend.
The week before we thought the
Swans were very good but all our
indicators showed that we weren’t
that far off the pace and we will
give them a real run this weekend.
How confident are you
of lifting the trophy on
Saturday?
There are always a lot of nerves
but we are going in with a positive
frame of mind, this is our third
grand final and we know what to
expect and hopefully that puts us in
good stead to start really well.
Nick Paine and Marcus Crook
last week were very dangerous;
they will obviously take a lot of
confidence into the weekend.
Marcus and Nick were not there
best when we played the Swans in
our first semi but it was great to
see them hit some form last week.
Ben Hughes was excellent and our
midfield was really well lead by
Rob Shirley so we know that if we
get the ball in they will do the job
for us.
How is your roster? Any
selection headaches?
We’re pretty settled, we basically
made the really hard decision last
week and young Lachie Hyfield
will probably miss out because we
have a full book to pick from. I don’t
think there will be any surprises.
The Swans have been the
benchmark all year, what are you
expecting from them?
We expect them to be very good.
They had twelve A-graders last
time, which is all the listed players
and we are expecting them all
to run out again and even their
Academy player are really strong.
They have been really strong all
year so we know what to expect
but hopefully they will be a little
bit slower out of the blocks after
the week off and we come out
charging. We expect to take it right
up to them and will be disappointed
if we lose.
Just finally, what’s your
final message before
the boys run out?
What we tell them is, don’t play
beyond your expectations, just do
your job and if every player does
their job and they can look each
other in the eye at the end of it,
then we will be fine.

By Jess Johnson
SO CLOSE,
YET SO FAR
The 2011 season was
one of many highs and
lows for the Eastlake
Football Club. The
exciting expansion
of the competition
for the 2011 season
meant more teams and
stronger competition.
The 2010 off season was a busy
one for the club with the signing
of several talented recruits that
would go on to play important
roles in the senior squad.
The season started slow with
two tough losses to strong
competition in the Sydney Swans
and the Morningside Panthers
from the Northern Conference.
The disappointing start to the
season reached a forgettable 1
win, 6 loss record. The Demons
then went on to turn their season
around winning 5 out of their next
7 games, a run that would see the
club charge into 4th position and
secure a finals berth. Eastlake
also made the feat of being the
first Eastern Conference team to
beat a Northern Conference team
with a thrilling victory against
Broadbeach.
Eastlake’s confidence going
into the finals was at a season
high and it ultimately took them
to a victory in the first round
of the finals. This victory was
particularly special because it
sent the Demons through to
the Preliminary Final
and also made the club
the first Canberra team
to beat the GWS GIANTS.
Unfortunately, Eastlake
season ended there
with a very tough loss to
Ainslie in the Preliminary
Final.
Eastlake saw plenty of
individual success and
potential through the
2011 season which saw 35
different players take to
the field in the senior side
throughout the year.
The Demon’s recruits
for the 2011 season
showed this year that
they could potentially
be the future
of the club’s success.
In particular Mitch
Frail and Aaron Wiles,
who gained selection
in the NEAFL Eastern
Conference Team of
the Year, along with
fellow teammates
Aaron Bruce and Chad
Gibson, after both
having great seasons.
20-year old Hayden Armstrong
had a breakout year showing his
potential with a very impressive
season after gaining senior
selection in the first half of the
year. Armstrong was the club’s
leading goal kicker with 30 goals
for the year and he was also
awarded with the NEAFL Eastern
Conference Rising Star Award.
The players now take a hard
earned rest before pre season
starts up again later in the year.
After a disappointing end to an
up and down season, the club
and players are determined to
achieve success in 2012 and
beyond. With a very young
squad, the potential is seemingly
endless and the club is excited
about what is install for the
Eastlake Demons.
Demons capitain Chad Gibson lead from the front all season
and can be proud of his teams spirited performance in 2011

DIVISION 2
grand final
looking for the hat-trick
The AFL Canberra Division
2 competition,
pathway to the successful
NEAFL, has
reached its climax
with this weekend’s
grand final being
contested by Queanbeyan
and Ainslie.
The minor-premiership
winning Tigers will be looking
to avenge their qualifying Semi
Final loss to the Tricolours in
week one of the finals.
Queanbeyan will be taking
plenty of confidence in to the
game with two of its players;
Brett Fruend and Paul Franchi
finishing first and second
respectively in the competition’s
best and fairest award.
Ainslie are also competing
in the NEAFL Grand Final so
they will be looking to have a
full strength compliment for
the main game – potentially
weakening their Division 2
team to some degree.
Queanbeyan General Manager,
Ron Fowlie said that the side
was always going to be wary
of a team like Ainslie who were
the benchmark Canberra side
in the NEAFL.
Fowlie also said he
was confident that
the dominant Tigers
Reserves were primed
to make it a hat-trick
of premierships after
their successes
in the 2009 and 2010
seasons.
While the reserves won’t be
looking anywhere beyond this
weekend’s game, the Tigers
club have been pleased to
announce the arrival of Kade
Klemke as the new director of
coaching for the 2012 season
and beyond.
Klemke, originating from
the Culcairn Football Club in
Riverina NSW is primed to
join the Tigers as possibly the
youngest player coach in the
history of AFL ACT/NSW.
At just 21 years of age, Klemke
will be sure to fit right in to
the Tigers culture; which is
transitioning with a youth
approach.
The club will be hoping for
some immediate success in
2012 with the introduction of
two new Sydney teams in to
the NEAFL.
“Hopefully this will attract
some quality signing to the
Tigers football club following
Kade’s arrival” said a club
spokesperson.
The Division 2 Grand final
will form the curtain raiser
entertainment for the NEAFL
decider with the opening
bounce set to take place at
11.45 am at Manuka Oval.
under 18’s
grand final
Here we go again...
Marist is looking
to make it four
premierships in a row,
when they play the
Belconnen Magpies
this weekend.
This is the third year in a row
Marist and Belconnen have
battled it out for the Under 18’s
flag, with Marist coming out on
top both times.
Marist Club President Brendan
O’Rourke says the strength of his
team is the side’s commitment
to each other and determination
until the end.
“We’ll play the game right to the
end because we know we can
run down oppositions,” O’Rourke
said.
This year Belconnen have
beaten Marist each time the
two sides have met. Coach John
Harper says his side doesn’t hold
grudges from previous years but
this time around, his side will be
looking to go all the way.
“This is our third attempt at it
with a different group of kids,
they’re all pretty chuffed to get
into the Grand Final again which
is great… hopefully we can play
well on Saturday and bring home
a trophy,” Harper said.
Both sides won’t be
changing game plans
come the big day,
preferring to stick to
what has worked for
each side throughout
the year.
Belconnen’s Under 18’s have
had numerous team changes
throughout the year with players
including Haper’s own boys
Lachlan and Jordan, being called
up to play in either reserve grade
or for the Belconnen NEAFL
side.
O’Rourke believes the fact that
Marist is a school based team
helps them to stay consistent
both on and off the field.
“The boys all go to school together
and they play together…
some of these boys have played
all the way through from Under
14’s together… The under 18
team is the pinnacle of football
at Marist, not the beginning that
it is for senior football at other
clubs,” O’Rourke said.
Harper expects the game to be a
hard fought contest and credited
the quality of the Marist side.
“Marist is a different entity come
finals time because they know
how to win… They’ve got some
very good players in their side…
It will be an interesting game,”
Harper said.
“We haven’t beaten them yet
[this season] but we only need
to beat them once,” O’Rourke
added.
Players to watch will be Best
and Fairest Runner Up Ciaran
O’Rourke, and the competition’s
leading goal kicker Liam
Flaherty.
Belconnen standouts are the
ever elusive player Isaac Taylor
and the side’s Captain Bradley
Posch who has lead the team
consistently all year.
Members and supporters are invited to the after
match function following the Grand Final to be held
upstairs in the Ainslie Football and Social Club from
6.00pm. Meals will be available. There will also be a
function on Sunday morning the 18th September at
10.30am where breakfast will be available. All players,
volunteers, staff and supporters welcome.
The Ainslie Reserves are in their first Grand Final
since 2005 when they defeated Eastlake to win
the Premiership. Ainslie also won the Reserves
Premiership in 2004. Anthony Bourke took over the
Reserves coaching in 2009 and there has been a
steady improvement finishing 4th in 2009, 3rd in 2010
to playing in the Grand Final in 2011. It is a good sign
for the future of the Club that 16 players in the Div 2
squad are under the age of 23.
Ainslie would like to thank all the Volunteers and
support staff who have helped out during the 2011
season. Thanks to timekeepers, Noel and James,
Managers, John O, Chris, Salvo and Jenny, Stats and
Video, Richard, Kathryn and Bob for their continued
assistance.
Thanks also to the volunteers who have helped with
the Running, Water and other duties.
Thanks also to the medical staff for doing such a great
job at training and on match days.
The Ainslie Football Club Presentation Night will be
held on Friday 14th October upstairs at the AF&SC.
QUEANBEYAN
The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank
all those who have been part of our organisation in
season 2011. The results may not have been on the
board in the NEAFL competition but as a club we are
extremely pleased with the progress made through the
ranks and look forward to 2012 with great enthusiasm.
45 players donned the black and gold at NEAFL level
giving great exposure to our younger group of players.
Our Reserve Grade has entered their 9th Grand Final in
11 years. Well done and Good Luck today. The manner
in which the Tigers Under 18 Grade and Ladies team
performed this year certainly augers well for 2012.
Thankyou to all our Coaches, Medical Personal, Team
Managers, volunteers, sponsors and supporters.
Our Junior organisation had record numbers along
with four teams in grand finals. Again a fantastic
achievement by all concerned at that level.
There has been one constant at both levels of football
in season 2011. Adrian Pavese conducts a professional
Junior Club which has gained many accolades from
other AFL Canberra clubs and from other sporting
bodies in Queanbeyan. In addition he has performed
the role of senior grade coach with distinction after
Rod O’Riley unfortunately stood down due to illness.
On top of that he still managed to continue his role as
Reserve Grade Co Coach (with Brian Campbell) and
progress this team into another tilt at the premiership.
A win will give the “lovable big bloke” back to back
to back premierships. Good luck “Pav” and thanks
for your time and commitment in what has been an
enormously big campaign for you.
Today marks the 100th occasion that Jackson
Brooker has donned the black and gold and the 50th
for James Manie. Congratulations on both milestone
achievements.
Congratulations to all award winners at the Mulrooney
Medal Gala Presentation Night and to Jack Masters
and his staff at AFL Canberra for their efforts in 2011.
2012 offers the following: A new coach takes the
reigns: a new electronic scoreboard will take pride of
place at Dairy Farmers Park: plans are now complete
for a $1.2 million upgrade of our home ground and
we now wait suitable funding to go ahead. One of the
most important things for 2012 is the exciting group of
youngsters ready to take the next step on the field for
the Tigers Club.
