BOUNDARY LINE
The Tradies Eastern Conference is certainly firming as
an extremely close competition, with some very tight
games in recent rounds being mixed in with some
upsets and even a draw. It’s been great to see the two
new teams to the Eastern Conference, Sydney University
and Sydney Hills Eagles, making a strong impact on the
competition already. Clearly, all clubs are heading into
every game with a genuine belief of coming away with
the four points regardless of their opponent.
Crowds are definitely up in 2012, with all venues
experiencing an increase, particularly out at Greenway
where Tuggeranong have hosted two twilight fixtures
which have been very well received. Evening games
are a concept the NEAFL is keen to explore for coming
seasons.
As you would be aware, we are streaming the match
of the round each week to www.neafl.com.au with
all clubs to receive a relatively even share of games.
This new initiative from the NEAFL has been very well
received, with more than 500 unique viewers tuning in to
watch the round 4 clash between Ainslie and the Swans.
It was great to hear that a number of home towns of
recruits have been showing the stream live in pubs and
clubs around Australia. Our weekly NEAFL Eastern
Conference Footy Talk TV show is going from strength to
strength, with each episode attracting in excess of 1000
unique hits. Thanks to the team at Coordinate, and our
regular host Greg Thomson for their great work on our
web based show.
The NEAFL have been hard at work finalizing
arrangements that will see us launching our own IPhone
App in the coming months, stay tuned for that one.
Preparations are well underway for our representative
program, with the Eastern Conference to take on the
Northern Conference on the Gold Coast on Saturday
26 May. The curtain raiser to that match will see the
NSW/ACT under 21’s playing the QLD/NT under 21’s.
The response from AFL recruiters has been extremely
positive and there will be a healthy representation of AFL
Clubs on hand to watch these two games. With more
and more mature age players getting an opportunity on
an AFL list in recent times, these representative games
will take on even more importance.
Elsworthy officiates in the big time
Central Coast umpire Nathan Elsworthy has had his
first taste of officiating at the elite AFL level since his
elevation to the AFL Umpires Rookie List earlier this
year.
Speaking at a recent appearance with AFL NSW/ACT
General Manager Tom Harley at the Newcastle No.1
Oval, Elsworthy said moving up to the elite level has
resulted in a few changes to his training routine.
“The biggest difference is the fitness training, I’m now
running between 50 and 60 kilometres a week,” he
said.
“The amount of work I’ve been putting into my
umpiring in the past year has gone up tenfold,” he said.
Elsworthy teleconferences with the Melbourne umpires
each week prior to the commencement of the round.
Preparation for the meeting takes around two hours he
says, in addition to a full-time schedule studying for a
pHD in Sports Science.
Despite the increase in his workload, Elsworthy
describes his new role as a “fantastic experience”
and hopes to be become a senior member of the AFL
umpiring squad next season.
Harley says it’s a great achievement for a NSW umpire
to be heading to the highest level of AFL officiating.
“It’s a fantastic effort for Nathan to be rookie listed this
year,” he said, “It’s a great achievement for him as well
as our umpiring team.”
“We’re striving to produce top quality
AFL talent across NSW/ACT, from
players and umpires to coaches and
administrators. Nathan is a great
example of the work that is being done.”
Harley was visiting Newcastle to inspect AFL facilities
in the region. AFL NSW/ACT is exploring further
opportunities to partner with local government to
improve infrastructure to benefit the AFL clubs in the
region.
CLUB NEWS
EASTLAKE
Eastlake has experienced a fair start to the season but
the Club is looking forward to seeing how the season
unfolds as more teams play each other. The overall
feeling at Eastlake is that the Club’s depth is stronger
than in previous years and this is maintaining the
competition for spots in the Senior team. There are
some good signs from the Senior Team and the Club
is keen to match up against teams like Belconnen,
Ainslie and the Giants in coming weeks.
The match against the Giants will be of particular
interest to Eastlake members. Eastlake is the Giants
largest Canberra Club sponsor.
Already, the Eastlake Football Club is enjoying the
patronage of many Giants fans to watch Giants on the
Club’s bigscreens when they play interstate. The new
faces at Eastlake are enjoying the refreshed Menu
available at passionfood@eastlake and the many other
services the Club provides for members.
Also on the Club front, the Sports Club Kaleen
continues to welcome many newcomers to the Club.
With the fully refurbished bars, members lounge and a
fantastic new Bistro Menu – the patrons are enjoying
the wonderful atmosphere at the Sports Club Kaleen.
Out at the Calwell Club, it’s an exciting time for
members with some fantastic Bistro promotions and
the onset of the Football season has many patrons
enjoying the games in the comfort of the Club.
The Eastlake Football Club, Calwell Club and the
Sports Club Kaleen are all major supporters of AFL in
Canberra and always welcoming members and guests.
QUEANBEYAN
The Tigers Club have enjoyed a strong start to the 2012
NEAFL Eastern Conference season. All grades are
performing creditably after some very hard work during
the off season by all our Coaching Staff. Thanks to Kade
Klemke, Adrian Pavese, Paul Campbell and Dave Matthews
for their enthusiasm since the completion of 2011 - along
with their respective assistants.
Our volunteer base continues to exemplify a professional
and sound organisation. Without naming all those involved
may we take this opportunity of thanking each one of you
for your efforts thus far and for the reminder of what will
be a demanding season. Thanks to those who assisted
with the Tigers PINK Day on 29 April and to Dave Hunter
for his efforts in organising the Tigers “Unite for the Fight”
to its already impressive list of corporate support. Care
Traffic have come on board as a sponsor of the Tigers Long
Luncheon which this year is being held on 20 July – Guest
Speaker being Danny Green.
Most importantly is the return of long time favourite
Sponsors. Chubbsy is a former senior grade player with
the organisation having won numerous awards at club
and League level and is Owner Manager of Tony Innaimo
Club while the Canberra Trophy Centre has increased their
support in recent weeks.
SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES
The Eagles are comfortable with their start to the
NEAFL season, but are still adjusting to the faster
pace and skill levels of this competition and learning
fast.
The full compliment of players is now with the Club
and includes some exciting additional talent through
a Northern Territory and PNG influence;
- Ross Tungatalum, Tiwi Bombers. Rocco was
recently named Best & Fairest in the Bombers
inaugural premiership winning team and is proving
hard to handle in the forward line
- Bradley Palipuaminni, Tiwi Bombers. Working well
in partnership with Rocco and settling into the side
well
- Amua Pirika, PNG. Has NEAFL experience through
his time at Mt Gravatt
- Theo Gavuri, PNG. Scholarship player
The boys are very popular with their team mates
and club members and enjoying their football at the
Eagles.
Preparation is coming along well for the Eagles
Foxtel Cup match against Mt Gravatt on May 5.
Special thanks to Telstra Business Centre Hills/
