Aspley will bid to reprise its Round 18 victory over the Sharks, when the sides<br />
clash in the first qualifying final at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday afternoon.<br />
At Graham Road in late July, six unanswered second quarter goals were the<br />
catalyst for the Hornets’ 27-point victory, the brown-and-gold’s turning the tables<br />
on their highly-fancied opponents, after narrowly losing their season-opener.<br />
But John Blair’s men have traditionally struggled to topple the Sharks on the<br />
Gold Coast, and after a draining trip to Darwin last weekend – where the Hornets<br />
played NT, and flew back to Brisbane on the same night – the away side will face<br />
its biggest challenge of the year backing up.<br />
This match-up has been set in stone for the last three weeks – with Southport<br />
locking up second spot, and the Hornets third – and both teams are desperate to<br />
get their finals campaign off to a winning start.<br />
The victor will face reigning premiers Brisbane next week, for a chance to<br />
progress directly to the Northern Conference decider, with the loser to host the<br />
winner of the Morningside and Redland Elimination Final.<br />
Aspley coach John Blair reasons the match “is a 50/50 toss of the coin,” with longtime<br />
combatant Norm Dare predicting a similarly hard-fought affair.<br />
It will be interesting to note how the Hornets’ crop of youngsters handle the big<br />
stage, with Dare reasoning Southport’s old heads could have an edge in a close<br />
finish.<br />
Morningside vs. Redland | Sunday August 25, 1:30pm, Esplen Oval<br />
Morningside will bid to stop the runaway train that is Redland, when they host the<br />
Bombers on Sunday afternoon at Esplen Oval.<br />
Redland, last year’s semi-finalists, have been the form team of the competition<br />
in the past two months, winning seven of their last eight – including victories over<br />
high-flyers, Aspley, NT, and Southport just last week – and they deserve to enter<br />
this match as favourites, especially considering their 58-point thumping of the<br />
Panthers only five weeks ago.<br />
Morningside was stung by the manner of that defeat, with the playing group<br />
resolving to never repeat its most disappointing display of the season.<br />
That steeliness will be amplified by the fact the Panthers will be minus club captain<br />
– and heart and soul – Kent Abey, who badly injured his ankle in the opening<br />
stages of last week’s clash with the Tigers.<br />
Regardless of the result on the weekend, Morningside can be immensely proud of<br />
their improvement this year; entrenching themselves in the top five for the majority<br />
of the season, after registering just three wins – and taking out the club’s first<br />
wooden spoon – in 2012.<br />
But though the Panthers are playing at home, with the added emotion of their<br />
captain’s injury, Redland travels well, and momentum – the most precious asset in<br />
football come finals – is on its side.<br />
