EDITORIAL
Round Ten proved to be a Tipsters nightmare best highlighted by Matthew Ridley
failing to bother the scorers in registering doughnuts with his tips.
Upsets were a common occurrence with starting favorites in GC Suns Reserves,
Mt Gravatt, Broadbeach, and Labrador all having their colors lowered.
The NT Thunder continue on their merry way and with a four game plus percentage
buffer at the half way mark must be odds on to host the Second Semi Final
on Saturday September 3 at TIO Stadium.
Our two AFL Reserve Grade sides lost to their Eastern Conference counterparts
but both offered unique opportunities for football followers in both Sydney and
Brisbane to view the next generation of player.
At Blacktown Olympic Park the Giants and Suns clash was wedged in between
two NAB AFL National Under 18 Championship matches. For the football purist,
on show was the up and coming talent combined with the already identifi ed talent
giving all stakeholders including the bevy of AFL club recruiting staff present
a fi rsthand glimpse at generation now and generation next.
Alignment of Talent with Second Tier is a key platform for the AFL and is a
benchmark for the NEAFL. Expect more creative cross fi xturing like this in the
future.
Meanwhile at the spiritual home of community football Coorparoo on a magnifi -
cent winters day the Lions Reserves and Swans Reserves battled in a momentum
swinging contest which went right down to the wire. Like Blacktown this
game drew a good sized crowd who seemed to enjoy both the setting and the
contest at hand.
From a neutral observers perspective it was fascinating to watch the machinations
of both clubs and how they go about their own development philosophies
on match day.
The Swans were very low on rotations (30 in total), kept their listed/rookie players
on the ground for upwards of 90% of game time, rotated top up players
through exterior positions on the ground, and allowed senior emergency Jarred
Moore to play three quarters before having an early tub and heading to the
Gabba.
NEXT WEEK’S GAMES
ROUND 12
Saturday 18th June
West Australia v Queensland
Rushton Park (WA)
It could be assumed that the low number of rotations had some impact on the
Swans fading last quarter as Brisbane regained the momentum it had in the
second.
The Lions on the other hand were high on rotations (105 in total), regularly
rotated their listed/rookie players and at a guess would have worked on 75-80%
game time across the board, gave major roles to top ups especially the impressive
Scott Clarke, Jack Parkes, and Alex Kitching, and withdrew senior emergency
Andrew Raines from the fray at half time.
It could be argued that Brisbane’s ability to run the game out and draw within one
point after trailing by 47 early in the last was a result of sound player management
during the game.
Food for thought for all our state league clubs when perhaps searching for best
practice when it may be in our own backyard.
ROUND 10 PREVIEWS
GC Suns Res v Morningside Saturday June 11 at H&A Oval 1.00pm (Main Event Broadcast Match)
Meeting for the fi rst and only time in the home and away season both clubs are handily placed
within the top fi ve but realize any slip ups could be hazardous to fi nals participation.
The Suns took an unbalanced side to Blacktown last week with a number of talls and were slow
out of the blocks, found their stride through the middle period of the game but gave the Giants too
big a start.
On the other hand the Panthers were up and about early, set some non negotiable at the early
contests and fi nished all over the Tigers.
Big Peter Mollison (pictured) had his best game for the Panthers but this week faces the might of
Tom Nicholls, Daniel Gorringe, and former Panther Tom Hickey.
The Suns are still having trouble fi nding a key forward to kick multiple goals. Their work behind
the ball and spread from stoppages is fi rst class but a lack of marks inside forward fi fty must be
causing some concern.
Morningside have seasoned veterans in Shaun Mugavin and Kent Abey performing well in this
area and will be buoyed by the return to form of Austin Lucy who perhaps put in his best game for
the season against the Tigers.
A real test for the Panthers will be to stop the run and carry of Gold Coast on a venue where they
have been exposed previously.
Shapes as a tight battle between two quality outfi ts and by 4pm one should be fi rmly entrenched in the top fi ve whilst the other
will be back amongst the pursuing pack.
Southport v Mt Gravatt Saturday June 11 at Fankhauser Reserve 2.00pm
When last they met in Round 2 the Vultures recorded a 26 point victory which may have fl attered
the Sharks given the home sides 29/18 scoring shots ascendancy.
As was the case early in the season all of the Vultures prime movers were up and about.
Fast forward to Round 11 and the Vultures have dropped their past two by less than a goal on
both occasions and notably in both losses their goal kicking conversion has let them down. Are
they still getting their hands on the footy? Yes. Are their structures still sound? Yes
The Sharks showed plenty against the Cats last week after scrapping for three quarters the game
broke open in the last and they recorded their second win for the season.
Ben Merrett, Dane Grant, Josh Baxter, and evergreen Adam Devine (pictured) came to the fore
and will all be required for repeat doses against what will be a determined Mt Gravatt opposition.
The Scott brothers have been great for the visitors at both ends of the ground and will be a key
focus for the Sharks match committee along with the ever dangerous Nathan Gilliland and Albert
Proud who both regularly load up against the Sharks.
On exposed form its very hard to go past Mt Gravatt but don’t underestimate the confi dence and
belief that can be gathered from a Southport outfi t desperate to keep their season alive.
Aspley v Redland Saturday June 11 at Graham Rd 2.00pm
It is a massive positive for the Hornets that this game has been relocated from Victoria Point due
to the closure of the Bombers ground for maintenance works. Conversely it is a real danger game
for the visitors after they look to rebound from a fourteen goal loss in Darwin.
The Hornets continue to show great character and spirit and despite not having any real standouts
get even contributions from Micah Buchanan, Reece Toye (pictured),Matt Davis, and the
clever James Brain.
The Bombers lost the Round 7 clash by 25 points in the end after dominating the fi rst half but
leaving the door open in the second.
Robert Copeland continues to lead the back half and Dan Roy has done some good stopping
jobs of late. In the Round 7 game Jeff Teale did a number on Bomber gun Phil Carse but hasn’t
played since due to an ankle injury. A return would certainly mean a redeployment to the Bomber
midfi elder.
Travis Johnstone is expected to return from injury and Anthony Corrie surely can’t be far from a
recall.
Rising Star nomination Brendan Colch shapes as the likely opponent of Josh Pullman who lowered
his colors last week to the Thunders Jason Roe.
Copeland had Scott Clouston last time and the big Bomber holds the key again after kicking fi ve
in that game.
The danger for the Hornets is that they have now generated genuine expectation. How they handle that and the added pressure
of starting this match as favorite could go a long way to determining the outcome.
NT Thunder v Brisbane Lions Res Saturday June 11 at TIO Stadium Darwin 7.00pm
Another quality performance from the Territorians put paid to the Bombers chances after being in the game at quarter time.
Solid contributions from Dane Bergman, Jake Dignan, and Paul Cox exemplifi ed the even spread in performance but it was
again the star quality of Cameron Ilett and Darren Ewing that could not be denied.
Niall McKeever may get fi rst crack at Ewing but the Lions will need to roll back quicker and work
off their general opponents to assist. This was missing last week when Sydney isolated Jesse
White early in the game against the Irishman.
With changes expected to the Lions senior side a number of demoted players may be presented
with the wonderful opportunity of regaining form against the current competition benchmark.
Xavier Clarke is slowly working his way back and Broc McCauley should have an enthralling
battle with Kenny Tyrrell.
Jason Roe is up and about and his battle with aerialist Aaron Cornelius should be a feature
Karl Lohde (pictured) has tapered off of late but along with the returning Iggy Vallejo offers a
strong body over the contest and the capacity to kick goals.
The Lions have lost quality top up player in Scott Clarke but both Jack Parkes and Alex Kitching
will leave nothing in the tank as they continue fi ne seasons. Both have been assets to the Lions
outfi t and more than held their own in quality surrounds.
Hard to see the Thunder dropping this one as Murray Davis continues to have them working at
optimum levels.
ROUND 10 PREVIEWS
Broadbeach v Labrador Sunday June 12 at H&A Oval 2.00pm
Uncharacteristic losses for both clubs last weekend with coaches undoubtedly disappointed
by the drop-offs late in the game.
The Tigers missed the run created by Mat Clarke and Steve Wrigley down back and H&A
Oval is a ground where teams need plenty of run and carry to break the lines.
In Round 7, Labrador won a tense, physical battle by 16 points ending a four game losing
streak.
These coastal derbies are always an arm wrestle and both clubs are well equipped with
proven ball winners.
The Cats need a lift through the middle of the ground with Jesse Derrick, Kallen Geary,
and Griffi n Underwood all playing well below their early season form at the moment. Michael
Cooke has been effi cient down back as has veteran Korey Fulton but the goals have
dried up for the Cats and big Jason Eagle is regularly dealing with multiple defenders as
they zone off their opponents.
The Tigers have Rick White and Fred Sleeth getting their hands on the ball but they need
some assistance at ground level inside the forward fi fty arc.
Mitch Brewer will have his work cut out against Trent Knobel and will need assistance as
the Cats look to cover promising ruckman Josh Kolka who is away on Scorpions duties.
Michael Gugliotta has been a revelation down back and could be used in a central wing
role at Merrimac where his athleticism can come to the fore.
The Tigers may also be without Grogan Medalist Todd Featherstone (pictured) who hobbled off late in the game against Morn-
SHARKS WIN
A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME
Southport coach Norm Dare knew his side had been building towards a victory before the breakthrough against Broadbeach at
Fankhauser Reserve last weekend, and the return of two high class players over the next month should mean there are more to
come.
The Sharks had been good for three quarters against Morningside, strong for a half against Redland, and competitive all day but
for inaccurate goalkicking against the Gold Coast Suns.
“We were pretty good against the Suns, we just didn’t convert,” Dare said. “They (the Suns) were kicking goals from the centre
square and we were missing from 30m out straight in front. They fi nished with 18.4 and we had 11.11 – the same scoring shots.”
“Sure Redland ran all over us but we missed eight chances in the fi rst quarter that day and it makes such a difference.”
The Sharks started in a similar fashion against Broadbeach last week with 1.6 in the fi rst quarter to trail by 10 points at the fi rst
change and Dare had a sickening sense of déjà vu. But his team straightened up to kick 14 of their next 18 shots to fi nish with
15.10, easily their highest score of the season.
The anticipated return of last season’s Ray Hughson Medallist and State full-forward Cleve
Hughes (pictured) will make even more difference to the Sharks’ conversion.
“Hopefully we’ll get him back within the next month,” Dare said of the talented goalkicker
whose last 12 months have been plagued by ankle problems.
“He might make a little bit of a difference but we won’t expect miracles from him when you
consider the limited preparation that he will have had.
“Thing still have to go right for Cleve and us – we thought at the start of the year he as
okay and we know what has happened.”
Gun recruit Wayde Mills will be a huge asset when he lands from an overseas venture,
which also should be within the month.
Mills can hold down any of the key positions and in tandem with Hughes, could make a
signifi cant difference in a competition where there is little between the teams.
The Sharks are only two games out of the top fi ve, although Dare’s concern is purely about
improving their game every week.
They blooded two debutants last week and had fi ve fi rst-year players in the team in total in a positive sign for the future.
Nathan Sharp, 17, started on Broadbeach playmaker Kallan Geary and did a good job, while 18-year-old Brock Askey showed
plenty of grunt.
Both Southport wins this season have come at home and they are 2-2 at Fankhauser Reserve for the season. They meet a Mt
Gravatt side on Saturday that has had its confi dence rocked by two close losses in the last fortnight, but one which revels on the
big Southport ground.
The two clubs split their clashes at Fankhauser last year, with the Sharks playing one of their best games of the season to easily
win the fi rst semi-fi nal.
BIG TIGER INDICATES A LONG
ASSOCIATION AHEAD WITH LABRADOR
By Terry Wilson
LABRADOR have been good for former AFL ruckman Trent Knobel – and it’s vice-versa because the big bloke has been excellent
for Labrador.
Getting to the stage where retirement looms as a distinct possibility, Knobel is into his fourth season in the yellow and black at
Cooke-Murphy Oval – and most importantly is playing as well as ever for the Gold Coast outfi t.
Now 31 years of age and after nine seasons in the AFL system, Knobel could be excused for fading into footy retirement.
But there is every chance he’ll go on for one, perhaps even more, years. If he does not, Knobel has professed a deep love for
the club and fully intends to carry on with the association.
Perhaps in coaching, but most certainly involved somewhere in the football side of
things.
It has been a long journey for the popular Gold Coast product, whose father Bill was
a rugby league winger with Wests in Brisbane, then with Mullumbimby in the Northern
NSW Group 18 competition.
Knobel’s fi rst fl irtations with Australian football came with two seasons playing with
Surfers Paradise under-9s, but he soon found a love for the water, both fresh and salt.
Not many people know this – and it took wife Megan to reveal as much – but Knobel
once beat future Australian long-distance star and dual Olympic 1500m gold medallist
Grant Hackett at junior competition level.
“I was a competitive swimmer from nine to 13,” said Knobel, who rediscovered the national
game as a 15-year-old when his Benowa State High team was short of ruckmen.
He resumed playing the game, spent a year with Surfers Paradise under-18s, then
switched to Broadbeach in the QAFL.
After one season with the Cats, Knobel was rookie-listed by the Brisbane Lions and
managed 13 senior AFL games in his three years at the Gabba.
But a glut of ruckmen – including Clark Keating, Beau McDonald and company, resulted
in Knobel opting for a trade – and he found a willing bidder in St Kilda, where
former Brisbane club-mate Steven Lawrence also found a new home.
“I was happy with it,” said Knobel of the trade after only 13 appearnces for the Lions.
“At that time they (Brisbane) had a big list of ruckmen and it was probably a good career move for me to leave.
“And it did work out well because I played 41 games with St Kilda – and I was happy.”
But things went wrong for Knobel. Coach of the time Grant Thomas, who also drew up players’ contracts, was said to have
included Knobel among a group he felt cost the Saints in a six-point loss to Port Adelaide in the 2004 preliminary fi nal.
Knobel denied hearing anything along those lines, but the rumour mill suggested he became a scapegoat.
Not long after that, Knobel and St Kilda parted company in far from amicable terms.
“I played what I thought was my best season of football – 24 out of 25 games,” he said.
“Then I went to renegotiate my contract. I was on nearly base salary as it was at the time, but he (Thomas) told me I was way
down the pecking order and I was given a take-it or leave-it option – and I had until that afternoon to decide.
“That was a big kick in the face for me. I had a young family and all I wanted was for some security in my contract.
“It was a bit of an insult.”
“I never came out and said anything. I took it on the chin because it’s all a part of football. Life goes on.
“The Richmond gave me another life and I was picked up by them in the 2005 pre-season draft.”
Knobel’s time in the AFL ran out at the end of the 2007 season after 75 games, the last 21 with Richmond, so he decided to
pack up and take his family back home to the Gold Coast where, after he talked to all three QAFL clubs, he settled on Labrador.
With daughter Emily, 8, and Max, 6, in support he liked the family club atmosphere at Cooke-Murphy, so the Tigers grabbed a
ready-made tall man to start their climb from the competition cellar.
One of Knobel’s career highlights – he played fi nals for both Brisbane and St Kilda – came last year when the Tigers made it
through to the grand fi nal against Morningside.
“I’ve never played in a seniors grand fi nal – so that was a huge highlight for me – but obviously it was a lowlight as well,” he said
after the Tigers blew a three-goal lead early in the fourth quarter.
NEAFL Football Record Issue11 11th - 12th June2011 Page 6
11/06/2011 1:46:24 PM

So as the Tigers mount another challenge in what has been an extremely
even inaugural NEAFL competition, Knobel believes Gold Coast clubs have
been hardest hit when it comes to the recruiting stakes.
“It’s a hard environment at the moment for Coast footy in terms of jobs, of getting
people here to play footy – to recruit them and get them jobs is very tough
at the moment with the whole economy,” he said.
“But I think Labrador are on the right track and the club is in a sound fi nancial
position.
“I think we have the cattle. It is just a matter of it all coming together.
“It has taken time because we lost half of our grand fi nal side from last year –
plus we have a new coach in Denis Knight.”
On the issue of what lies ahead for Knobel there is one thing he insists will
happen.
“I’ll never say never (in regards to coaching), but Labrador has been fantastic
for me. It’s a fantastic atmosphere and I’ll stay involved with football, whether
it be helping out with my son’s coaching or at Labrador in some degree.”
NAB RISING STAR NOMINEE ROUND NINE
Brendan Colch - Aspley
By Peter Blucher
Football is so much about opportunity. So often one person’s mis-fortune will be someone
else’s fortune. Just as it is exactly at Aspley this year with Brendan Colch.
The lanky 20-year-old started the season playing back fl ank or back pocket in the Reserves.
It was only in Round 2 that he played his fi rst game at fullback in the Reserves.
Yet now, seven games and eight weeks on, he is fi rmly entrenched in the defensive goalsquare and, according to coach Russell
Evans, showing no signs of surrendering his post.
And all because Tyson Hartwag, a boom Hornets recruit last year who played every game in
2010 and fi nished sixth in the club Best & Fairest, was ruled out for the rest of the 2011 season
with injury after Round 2.
Colch, who played Round 2 and Rounds 10-11-12-13 in the Aspley seniors last year in between
commitments with the Australia Post Queensland U18 side, was named Aspley’s best player in
his fi rst senior game of this year against the Gold Coast Suns Reserves.
After three more solid games settling into his new role he was named third-best in Round 8
against Morningside, and was named his side’s best against Broadbeach and Mt.Gravatt the
last two weeks.
So consistent has he been and so good was he last week that he is the Round 10 nomination
for the NAB NEAFL Rising Star Award (Northern Conference).
Coach Evans is an unashamed Colch fan, likening him to Essendon fullback Dustin Fletcher.
Not that Evans is suggesting the former Kedron and Sandgate player is about to replicate the feats of the Essendon champion,
but he does see a striking physical resemblance.
“He’s got those same Inspector Gadget arms,” Evans said pointedly. “He can reach things that a lot of other players cannot
reach which is a defi nite advantage.”
It’s a glowing tribute for a player who stands 192cm but weighs not much more than 80kg.
“He’s built like a rake – he’s a total lanky type who looks a bit underweight,” said Evans.
“But he’s been absolutely fantastic for us and as much as we were disappointed when Tyson (Hartwig) went down we haven’t
lost anything at all because Brendan has been so good.
“Since he came into the side he’s at least broken even with if not beaten the best full forwards in the competition.
“He’s quite disciplined in the way he plays, and he’s got great skills. He rarely misses a target with foot and hand, and although
he’s a bit of a loper he’s got good pace. He can chase blokes down even though he doesn’t look like he’s running fast.
“And he’s got an excellent attitude. He’s always willing to listen and learn, and he does whatever you ask him to do without
question. He’s very balanced in his outlook.
“Some blokes will want to rationalize everything you tell them but he just listens and tries
to make the necessary adjustment and do whatever you ask him to do.
“He’s very cool under pressure – he doesn’t panic – and I think he’s learning a lot from
having a bloke like Robbie Copeland playing out in front of him at centre half back. You
can see a lot of Robbie coming out in Brendan.”
And all that despite the fact that Colch is still searching for full fi tness.
Having played in the State U18 side as an over-age player in 2010 after a string of niggling
injuries in 2009, he was struck down with glandular fever in the lead-up to 2011 and
has had repeat bouts of illness this year.
“He just gets sick a lot,” said Evans, simplifying a frustrating situation. “If there’s a fl u
around he gets it. He hasn’t really trained for the last couple of weeks – he just rugs up
during the week and plays on weekends.
“As good as he’s been, we can see an even bigger up side in him when he’s able to get
out on the track and train at full intensity.”
Colch, a product of Holy Cross Primary School at Wooloowin and Sandgate High School,
started football as a six-year-old at Kedron and has played ever since.
A standout Northern Raiders junior, he won the Sandgate Rising Star Award and a spot in
the Northern Raiders Team of the Year in 2009 before winning his fi rst Queensland jumper last year.
While the absence of an interstate U21 fi xture this year has denied him an opportunity to add another quite attainable line to his
growing CV he’s building a solid platform for a very solid career at Graham Road.
Colch is the second Aspley played nominated for the NEAFL Rising Star Award this year behind former State U18 teammate
Michael Hutchinson.
He also joins NT Thunder’s Jed Anderson and Ross Tangatalum, Broadbeach’s Kallen Geary and Luke Shreeve, Mt.Gravatt’s
Nathan Reid, Brisbane Lions’ Richard Newell, and Redland’s Trent Manzone and Alex Sexton, who was nominated after playing
for the Gold Coast Suns.
CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGE
AT NARANGBA
Colour, nor culture, bore any barrier for a special group of boys who recently took part in the Narangba Valley Vipers AFL Academy
and Tiwi College cultural exchange.
Touring through south-east Queensland, boys from both schools immersed themselves into each other’s culture, creating an
extraordinary bond based initially on football but fi nishing strongly on equal terms as friends.
Tiwi College started their Queensland experience with a visit to Narangba Valley High School and took part in mainstream
classes that included a music workshop, where the boys utilised computer programs to record a rap song. Music coordinator
Paul Berardi rated the musical talent within the group as amongst the best he heard at the school.
After a combined training run with their new teammates, the self-named ‘Tiwi Vipers’ combine side consisting of half Viper players
and half Tiwi College players took on Nudgee College in an exhibition game under lights at Zillmere.
With names like Rioli and Wonaeamirri in the team, a highly entertaining game pleased all spectators, with the Tiwi Vipers
sneaking home to record a nine-point win. After the game players from both teams enjoyed a barbecue with a chance to mingle
with each other and get excited about a rematch next year. The following day the Tiwi College students joined 20 Narangba
students to begin a Leadership and Cultural camp, with a fi rst-stop visit to Burnside SHS to share time with their Volleyball Academy.
Channel 7’s Sunshine Coast bureau joined in the festivities by interviewing students from both schools in a memorable experience
for all involved. The boys trip was beamed across Sunshine Coast television that evening, showcasing the cultural exchange
and the powerfully positive message that comes with it.
Next stop was out to Cherbourg State School, an Indigenous community in the South Burnett Region. Boys from Narangba Valley
ran their annual Cherbourg AFL clinic with the help of senior Tiwi College students for the rugby league dominated school,
providing an opportunity to mix in with another group of talented young people. A game at the end provided a glimpse of future
athletic prospects in an area that has produced names like Tonga and Sandow.
Settling into camp that evening provided a real turning point for the exchange, with the boys given free time to socialise, play
games and mix with one another, learning more and more about each other’s lives and culture. A new day saw another opportunity
for the Tiwi Vipers to play together with a visit to Maryborough to take on a Wide Bay representative side.
Coached by Viper senior students Ryan Manson and Mitchell King, the football on display was simply breathtaking, with Tiwi’s
Adam Tipungwuti and Jack Munkara taking it up a notch with scintillating runs off half back to help the Tiwi Vipers record another
win.
The win was celebrated with singing and laughing all the way back to camp, and further on into the evening around a camp fi re.
After days of reassuring most of Tiwi boys that south east Queensland beaches are free of crocodiles and deadly stingers, the
last day together for the Tiwi Vipers started with surfi ng lessons at Noosa.
It was fair to say that the boys from both schools should stick to footy, however all boys had the times of their life learning a new
skill away from the comforts of a football fi eld. For the Tiwi College students it provided an opportunity to enjoy the ocean away
from the dangers that are so often present in the far north.
The fi nal stop of the tour was to the Gabba as special guests of the Brisbane Lions as they took on the Sydney Swans. Boys
from both schools continued to enjoy each other’s company, with the real possibility of maybe one day returning to the Gabba to
watch a member of this year’s Tiwi Vipers group playing at the elite level.
Narangba Valley AFL Academy Director Greg McMahon could not have been any happier with the way the week panned out.
“All the boys mixed tremendously well, forming not only lifelong memories, but hopefully lifelong friendships,” McMahon said.
“The success of this cultural exchange highlights the very reason why we do this, to provide an opportunity for young men to
step out of their comfort zone, challenge social stereotypes and create rewarding opportunities to experience and value others
cultures.”
On the existing relationship already shared with the Tiwi community, McMahon added: “Each time we share time together with
the Tiwi College, it blows my mind how powerful AFL football can be in helping create bonds between young people, which then
opens the door for so many more opportunities to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.
“It simply helps in setting up a positive attitude and perception for the future of our nation regarding cultural differences and valuing
each other as equals.”
In August the Tiwi College will play host for the Vipers when they will immerse themselves within Tiwi Island’s life and culture.
Year 12 student Ryan Manson said he can’t wait to get back up there and catch up with old friends.
“That in itself is motivation enough to grow this concept even further,” McMahon said.
The Narangba Valley SHS Vipers AFL Academy paid tribute to the people who supported the Tiwi Vipers Closing the Gap
campaign - Tiwi College, KooGa, Kangaroo Bus Lines, Caboolture Sports Club, Energex, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Member
for Morayfi eld Mark Ryan, Trent Ryan and Jesse Green (AFL Queensland), Rob Searle (AFL Wide Bay), Paul Williams and
Malcolm Holmes (Brisbane Lions), Chris Connolly and Fiona Trewhitt (Melbourne Football Club), John Stackpoole (Nudgee
College), AFL Queensland Brisbane North, Brumbies Narangba Valley, Boulder Creek Holiday Camp, Cherbourg SS, Hon. Mal
Brough, Rick Cass and Tony Schwieso (Burnside SHS), Channel 7 Sunshine Coast and ABC Radio Brisbane.
DAVEY DESPERATE FOR TIGERS
TO MAKE AMENDS
Former Warragul star Ryan Davey has endured a lively initiation to the NEAFL northern conference with his new club Labrador
see-sawing through the fi rst half of 2011.
Davey has played all 10 games for the Tigers, which is a rarity as the gold-and-blacks have been hit hard by injury since the
pre-season. They lost reigning best and fairest winner Mat Clarke and gun defender Steve Wrigley on the eve of last Sunday’s
grand fi nal replay against Morningside and were smashed by the Panthers by 95 points. It left them with a 4-5 win-loss record
and facing a Gold Coast derby showdown at Broadbeach on Sunday to keep in touch with the leading sides.
“From what I gather, they’re all very tough games,” Davey said. “They got beaten as well last week so they’re in the same boat
as us, coming off a very disappointing game.”
“We’ll have a couple coming back and we’ve got a bye the following week, so we’ll put it all on the line.
“We won’t leave anything to chance, that’s for sure.”
Davey, a four-time club best and fairest winner, has been named in the northern conference team of the week twice and was
among his side’s best players again last week. He sets high standards for himself, however, and is looking for a bigger second
half of the season.
“I’ve been hoping for some better results than what I’ve been putting together and hopefully I can come good in the second half
of the year,” he said.
The hard-running left-footer is well suited to his new surrounds.
“The game style is a lot different up here, it’s more open and free running than the mud where it’s heavy and congested back
home,” he said. “There’s more ‘spread and go’ here. I’ve just got used to what the side is doing and I’m starting to do that.”
He is enjoying playing in a different competition to where he grew up.
“It’s refreshing to get to a game of footy and not know the players and the reputations,” he said. “I’ve come out of six years in the
same competition back home and you know every player and every team inside out. I’m enjoying it. I got up here in January so
I missed half the pre-season but I’ve got amongst the boys since then.”
“We got off to a great start - it was really positive given the injuries we had and situations where we were fi nishing games with
18 fi t men and losing players regularly. It was tough when we lost four in a row but we fought back and had good wins against
Broady and Brisbane.”
Davey does not believe the big loss at the hands of Morningside, where they conceded the last 15 goals of the game, will unduly
affect the Tigers’ confi dence.
“We’ll take as much as we can out of the game,” he
said. “If we had won we would have been third but now
we’re back to eighth. The reality in this competition this
year is that if you win two or three in a row, you will fi nd
yourself second or third on the ladder.”
“We’ve been right in every game, it was the fi rst blowout
we’ve had.”
In fact, all eight of the Tigers’ games had been decided
by fi ve goals or less until last week. They beat Broadbeach
in the Tigers’ den at Cooke-Murphy Oval a month
ago, with Davey, Todd Grayson and Rick Davey the
standouts in a tight contest.
