of Theology program. She attended
meetings at SMU’s
seminary during the year and
a three-week academy this
summer. Students attend
classes and seminars, visit
churches, participate in community
service and meet regularly
with mentors.
“It is an amazing program,
and I think our students come
back with a deeper theological
basis than many adults
I know who have been in
church for years,” said Ron
Britton, a member of the MCH
Spiritual Development staff.
Independent
Living Program
MCH recently began an independent
living program that
provides housing and case
management support for recent
graduates, ages 18-22.
MCH youth from residential
care and foster care are eligible
for the program based on
their individual needs.
“The purpose of the program
is to assist recent graduates
who need additional
support as they develop the
necessary independent living
skills to be successfully employed,
pursue advanced education,
attain housing, and
successfully manage the dayto-day
stresses of life as they
transition to adulthood,” said
Jeff Creel, program director.
Two homes are provided
for male and female residents.
Participants are expected
to maintain a job
and/or attend school, and
they are encouraged to be
active in the community. In
addition to Creel, support
staff includes “Life Coaches”
and a unit manager.
Residents participate in
life skills classes and learn
how to cook, use public
transportation and develop
a personal budget. Residents
are responsible for home unit
chores and pay monthly rent.
Q& A
with Yesenia,
Waco campus resident
Yesenia has been involved
with JROTC at her high
school for three years. As a
junior last year, she earned
an impressive 11 awards,
including Cadet of the Year,
the Association of the United
States Army Medal and a
college scholarship.
We talked with Yesenia to
learn more about her involvement
with JROTC.
What motivates you to excel
in JROTC? I like helping
people and I enjoy competition.
I want our JROTC
to be the best, so I strive
to do well myself and help
motivate my fellow cadets to
do well.
What does it mean to you
to be recognized? It means
a lot. I know that others see
my hard work and it motivates
me to do even more.
What are your plans for the
future? I would like to graduate
next year in the top ten
percent of my class. My goal
is to attend the University of
Texas and earn a bachelor’s
degree in biology. My long
term goal is to go to medical
or nursing school.
