6 ANNUAL REPORT 2008-2009 The Lloydminster campus was converted into an Athletes Village for the 1,500 participants who competed in the 2008 Saskatchewan Summer Games. Lakeland opened its doors again as a co-host of the Prairie All Star Soccer event in Lloydminster in May 2009. More than 200 athletes from Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories and Edmonton stayed in residence and took part in seminars at the campus. The desire to support a colleague and a student diagnosed with cancer sparked instructors in Lakeland’s electrical department to join the fight against the disease. As part of a local radio station’s radiothon, the instructors offered to do all the electrical work for a new home construction project. The winning bid for their services was $8,000. At the Vermilion campus, pre-employment welder and electrician programs ran as did second period intakes for instrument technician and steamfitter-pipefitter. The open studies program was also offered, but had mixed results. Without new funds for the program, it was difficult to respond to the individual academic needs of each student. The program will likely not continue. The opening of the Bill Kondro Wing allowed Lakeland to expand programming at the Lloydminster campus. Event coordinator, massage therapy and pharmacy-technician programs were offered and a January intake was added for the practical nurse program. University studies expanded its course offerings with beginner’s French I and II, intermediate French I and II, two first-year physics classes, and new physical education, psychology, sociology and art history courses. Two sections of English were added to lower the student-to-instructor ratio in the classes. Programming was also offered in a number of off-campus locations. Lakeland brokered its early learning and child care, educational assistant and office administration programs to Credenda, a virtual high school in Prince Albert, Sask. A total of 108 students registered in Lakeland courses offered through Credenda. Lakeland’s educational assistant program was also offered in Strathcona County and was brokered to Carlton Trail Regional College. Parkland Regional College offered Lakeland’s firefighter (NFPA 1001) in Melville, Sask., with some onsite training done at the training field at the Vermilion campus. Sign language interpretation was launched at the University of Alberta’s Edmonton campus. Lakeland is the first college to offer a program at the Edmonton campus. Three early learning and child care courses, one educational assistant course and one university studies course were offered in Wainwright. Two other courses were canceled due to low enrolment. The renewable energy and conservation online program started in October 2008. Four of the program’s 10 eight-week courses were delivered through eCampusAlberta during the academic year. Lakeland increased the number of online courses it offers through eCampusAlberta. In fact, Lakeland eCampusAlberta registrations increased from 91 in 2007-2008 to 584 in 2008-2009. The bachelor of applied business: emergency services program accounted for the majority of the registrations. The following programs were offered by Lakeland during the 2008-2009 academic year.
