Born in Denver to a musical family, Shamie Royston, pianist, composer <strong>and</strong> educator is a unique musician in her own way. Most of her acclaim has been noted in her<br />
musical compositions as well as her exquisite ability to teach young musicians ranging from elementary school to the college level <strong>and</strong> she has been known to be one of the<br />
top educators in her field. She has given clinics <strong>and</strong> adjudicated many jazz festivals in the Denver area as well as taught jazz ensembles to young musicians.<br />
Shamie studied classical piano at Denver University <strong>and</strong> was identified as a rising up-comer on the Denver music scene. She graduated<br />
from DU with honors <strong>and</strong> began teaching at Denver <strong>School</strong> for the Arts. For the next decade, Shamie produced top Jazz <strong>and</strong> Concert <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong><br />
ensembles in Colorado public school systems, as well as citywide <strong>and</strong> state jazz ensembles. Her middle school b<strong>and</strong> at Sierra Middle <strong>School</strong>,<br />
was one of the top in her district. Shamie also held one of four positions teaching in the prestigious Colorado Honor <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong> organization.<br />
During this time Shamie honed her writing <strong>and</strong> playing skills, <strong>and</strong> in 2006, she moved to New Jersey to pursue music.<br />
Presently, Shamie is an up <strong>and</strong> coming pianist in the jazz arena. She has a soulful, melodic approach to playing the piano, <strong>and</strong> her<br />
compositions are appreciated by many jazz listeners. Shamie has written for trumpeter, Sean Jones, Sage, Tia Fuller <strong>and</strong> many other colleges<br />
<strong>and</strong> universities. She has performed with many great musicians such as, Sean Jones, Christian McBride, Lonnie Plaxico, Ron Miles, Tia<br />
Fuller, Ralph Peterson, Kit McClure Big <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong>, <strong>and</strong> many others. Shamie continues to be a leading force <strong>and</strong> new voice in the jazz world.<br />
Shamie’s debut CD entitled Portraits was released in Fall 2011.<br />

Reginald Thomas can be seen fronting his own groups (Mardra/Reggie Thomas Ensemble; OGD) on both piano <strong>and</strong> Hammond organ <strong>and</strong> as a sideman with great artists<br />
including , Ann Hampton Callaway, <strong>and</strong> the Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker Ensemble. Most recently he was the accompanist for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz<br />
Vocal Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Reggie continues to appear as guest artist at collegiate jazz festivals around the country including Lawrence<br />
University, the University of South Florida, <strong>and</strong> Texas Tech University. He has also performed internationally in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Milan, Italy; Warsaw <strong>and</strong><br />
Poznan, Pol<strong>and</strong>; Senegal, <strong>West</strong> Africa; <strong>and</strong> London, Engl<strong>and</strong>. Recordings include work with Clay Jenkins, Kim Richmond, Clark Terry/Mike<br />
Vax, as well as his own recordings Fade to Blue with wife Mardra (MaxJazz), St<strong>and</strong>ard Time (Victoria) <strong>and</strong> 4 (Jazz Compass). Reggie has<br />
been awarded the Excellence in the Arts award from the Greater St. Louis Arts <strong>and</strong> Education Council <strong>and</strong> was named in the Riverfront<br />
Times 2005 “Best of St. Louis” issue as Best Jazz Artist.<br />
After almost 20 years as professor of music at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Professor Thomas joins the faculty of Michigan State<br />
University in the fall of 2011. Reggie is also a consultant/clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center working with the Essentially Ellington Program<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong> Director Academy <strong>and</strong> has served on several summer jazz faculties across the country <strong>and</strong> abroad including the International<br />
<strong>Association</strong> for Jazz Education Teacher Training Institute; the Birch Creek Music Center; the Eastman <strong>School</strong> of Music Summer Jazz Camp;<br />
Summer Jazz Academy in Chodziez, Pol<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong>, most recently, the Barbican Center in London. He remains an active clinician/adjudicator<br />
at colleges throughout the country <strong>and</strong> at International <strong>Association</strong> for Jazz Education Conventions (now JEN). Thomas has directed All State<br />
Jazz <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong>s, Combos <strong>and</strong> Jazz Choirs in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, South Dakota <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tennessee</strong> <strong>and</strong> directed the first ever Missouri<br />
All-College Jazz <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong>.
