Dr. Timothy W. Oliver is the Director of Bands and Coordinator of Wind and Percussion Studies at Arkansas State University. A strong proponent of both performance and music education, Dr. Oliver conducts the
ASU Wind Ensemble, teaches courses in graduate and undergraduate conducting and music education, and supervises student teachers. A native of Centralia, MO, Dr. Oliver is a
graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, from which he holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Music, Master of Arts in Music with an emphasis in conducting, and
Master of Arts in Education. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education Degree from the Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Some of Dr. Oliver’s teachers include
Daniel Peterson, Thomas Trimborn, Clifford Madsen, and James Croft. Prior to his appointment at ASU, Dr. Oliver was a faculty member at the University of Kansas and at Temple
University. He also previously served as both a high school and junior high school band director in Missouri and Florida.
Dr. Oliver is an active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for a diverse array of musicians at the professional, collegiate and secondary school levels. He is also an active researcher
with projects focusing on music performance and music education. Dr. Oliver has conducted ensembles or presented research in 17 different states and the District of Columbia.
Publications featuring his research include the Journal of Band Research, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Teaching Music and The Instrumentalist.
Dr. Oliver is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, National Band Association, Music Educators
National Conference, Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Arkansas Music Educators Association, Phi Kappa Lambda and an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and
Tau Beta Sigma. He enjoys a variety of activities including racquetball, reading and completing home improvement projects as well as spending time with his wife Rebecca and children
Benjamin and Gwendolyn.

Dr. Lewis Liddell, Sr. is Associate Professor of Music and Director Bands at Jackson State University. He received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Jackson State University, Master of Music Education degree
from the University of Louisiana Monroe, and the Doctorate from Mississippi State University. He studied conducting under Professor William W. Davis, the internationally renowned conductor, Dr. Joe Barry Mullins,
and marching band techniques under Dr. William C. Moffit.
In addition to directing the Jackson State University Marching Band and conducting the Symphonic Band, he supervises a staff of six directors and is responsible for the administration
of the total band program. As a member of the undergraduate and graduate faculty, his teaching duties include directing Master Theses/research projects, applied clarinet, oboe, bassoon,
wind literature, marching band techniques, music appreciation, and conducting.
His teaching career began in 1967, as band director at Wesley Ray High School, Angie, Louisiana. In 1970, Dr. Liddell assumed the band director’s position at Brinkley High School,
Jackson, Mississippi. After 14 years of teaching and directing bands in Jackson Public Schools, Dr. Liddell moved to higher education, serving as Director of Bands at Jackson State
University since July 1992.
Dr. Liddell has served as an adjudicator, consultant, clinician, speaker and conductor throughout the nation. Dr. Liddell has received numerous honors and awards including the
“Ambassadors of SWAC” Award, Jackson Music Award, and the Jackson State University National Alumni Association’s Achievement Award. Recently, he was inducted into the
Mississippi Magnolia Band Director’s Hall of Fame. His affiliations include the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the College Band Directors National Association
(CBDNA), Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity.
Dr. Liddell is married to Dr. L. Frances P. Liddell. They are the parents of four sons and two daughters. And five of their children are graduates of Jackson State University.
