Used by numerous schools, from elementary level to university, around the world, the Breathing Gym is a series of fun exercises that<br />

increase airflow <strong>and</strong> stamina, improve tone <strong>and</strong> breath control, reduce body tension, <strong>and</strong> raise energy level <strong>and</strong> focus. This session<br />

focuses on how <strong>and</strong> why the best drum corps, marching <strong>and</strong> concert b<strong>and</strong>s implement the Breathing Gym to take their rehearsals<br />

<strong>and</strong> performances to the next level.<br />

<strong>and</strong> Bassoon Sections of Your <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong>s<br />

This session will empower b<strong>and</strong> directors to foster the growth of <strong>and</strong> maintain a double reed section of excellence in their<br />

b<strong>and</strong>s. Topics covered will include instrument selection <strong>and</strong> maintenance, the “who’s <strong>and</strong> “when’s of beginning students on<br />

bassoon <strong>and</strong> oboe (including ideas about students switching from other instruments), <strong>and</strong> issues pertaining to the selection<br />

<strong>and</strong> adjustment of reeds.<br />

6:30 – 7:15 pm Assessment in the Music Performance Classroom Chattanooga Room, Marriott<br />

Presenters: Philip Joyner, Jr., Hickory Ridge Middle, <strong>and</strong> Dr. Sheryl Lane, Kingsbury High<br />

Conference participants will be presented with viable tools <strong>and</strong> techniques to better assess students of b<strong>and</strong>, orchestra, <strong>and</strong><br />

other musical ensembles. Both formative <strong>and</strong> summative types of assessments will be addressed.<br />

Session B: The Middle <strong>School</strong> <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong> Ensemble Sound: Balance <strong>and</strong> Blend Chattanooga Room, Marriott<br />

This session is a culmination of 25 years of experience teaching beginning b<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> will focus on the essential<br />

concepts necessary to create a successful beginning b<strong>and</strong> program. “Real life” examples of teaching / developing young<br />

musicians’ individual tone quality <strong>and</strong> intonation, thus improving balance <strong>and</strong> blend will be presented.<br />

This session has been accepted by TMEA to be presented at All-State.<br />

8:30 – 9:15 am Session A: Finding That Sweet Sound: Tone Development<br />

for High <strong>School</strong> Trumpet Players<br />

Presenter: Dr. Kurt Gorman, University of <strong>Tennessee</strong> at Martin<br />

I will discuss <strong>and</strong> emphasize the central concept of creating a beautiful sound, <strong>and</strong> address common problems with tone<br />

production <strong>and</strong> embouchure development. Related topics will include intonation, breathing, phrasing. A h<strong>and</strong>out of<br />

exercises <strong>and</strong> examples will be distributed to attendees.<br />

Session B: Healthy Set-Up for Cellists & Efficient Practice Techniques Chattanooga Room, Marriott<br />

for the String Players’ Left H<strong>and</strong><br />

Presenters: Mr. Leonardo Altino, <strong>and</strong> Dr. Soh-Hyun Park Altino, University of Memphis<br />

This practical session for string teachers will provide ways to build healthy bow hold <strong>and</strong> left h<strong>and</strong> for cello students. It will<br />

also explore simple <strong>and</strong> effective ways to help string students gain underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the left h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the fingerboard in the<br />

area of intonation, shifting, <strong>and</strong> vibrato.<br />

Recommendations for a Tuba & Euphonium Tune-Up<br />

Presenter: Dr. Ed Owen, Arkansas State University<br />

This informative session will provide music educators with tools to “tune-up” their beginner or advanced euphonium <strong>and</strong><br />

tuba sections. Demonstrations of excellent <strong>and</strong> poor technique will be demonstrated <strong>and</strong> discussed with the express purpose<br />

of solving the most common problem areas. Topics will include the following fundamentals: Poster <strong>and</strong> Holding Positions;<br />

Breathing Technique; Embouchure Formation <strong>and</strong> Tone Production; Articulation; Vibrato; <strong>and</strong> Intonation.<br />

10:10 – 10:55 am In the Trenches: Who Plays What in Beginning <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong> Matters!<br />

This session is a lab setting with middle school students attempting to play musical instruments for the first time. The<br />

clinic focuses on identifying common denominators that indicate potential for success on each instrument <strong>and</strong> strategies for<br />

assisting beginning b<strong>and</strong> students in choosing to play that instrument.<br />

of Social Media for Your <strong>B<strong>and</strong></strong> Program<br />

Presenter: Dr. Michael Stewart, University of <strong>Tennessee</strong> Knoxville<br />

Unlike previous generations, today’s students are constantly faced with new <strong>and</strong> immediate means of communication. The<br />

days of letters <strong>and</strong> phone calls have since been replaced with texts, chat rooms, <strong>and</strong> emails. Constant access to information<br />

can be a double-edged sword for b<strong>and</strong> directors that can no longer be ignored. Social Media gives b<strong>and</strong> directors the<br />

opportunity to build public relations, communicate with parents/students, provide information, <strong>and</strong> recruit. However,<br />

Social Media, if not monitored, can also be a source of many problems in these same areas. This presentation will discuss<br />

ways to utilize the full resources of today’s Social Media while protecting you, your students, <strong>and</strong> your program from the<br />

pitfalls of 24/7 communication.<br />

to Streamline Your Rehearsal Technique<br />

This clinic is designed to introduce the Scribe Software as a means of rehearsal analysis to give directors precise feedback to<br />

fine tune their teaching. More importantly, the session will highlight the commonalities in the rehearsal techniques of master<br />

teachers to provide another point of view for today’s music educator.
