HANS LEOKE – BOOK MERCHANT AND PUBLISHER
Linda Sarapuu
The importance of the activities of Hans Leoke (8.01.1853/ 27.12.1852
JC/ – 16.08.1919), before he started his publishing activities, was limited
mainly to Viljandi and its surrounds. In 1872–1890 he was a local school
teacher with different cultural interests in several places in Viljandi county.
He was an active figure in societies and a folklore collector. As he started
work as a book merchant and a publisher, Hans Leoke moved outside the
borders of his home parish.
Leoke founded the first Estonian bookshop and a lending library in
Viljandi in 1891. Among other well-known Estonian book merchants he had
great merits in promoting books in the Estonian language.
Leoke was recorded in the cultural history of Estonia with his publishing
activities, which he started in 1895, specialising mainly in publishing drama
works. He concentrated primarily to the need of amateur drama groups for
plays with simple plots.
Among the original plays published in the series “Rahva näitemängud”
(Popular Plays) the works of August Kitzberg are given an honourable place.
Also the plays by Jakob Liiv, Heino Anto and Christian Rutoff-Rajasaar are
highly appreciated.
