Challenge: Initiative: Lead Partner: Description: Raising the number of middle school youth transitioning from middle school to high school on time Higher Achievement Higher Achievement Dr. Yvonne Brandon, Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools, invited Higher Achievement to help Richmond’s middle school students in greatest economic need navigate a path to academic success. In June 2011, in partnership with N2N, Higher Achievement Richmond will open two Achievement Centers and begin delivering its year-round rigorous academic programming to 120 5th and 6th graders from Northside and Southside neighborhoods. Centers will be based at Henderson and Boushall Middle Schools which are both Title I schools with 90% of students eligible for free and reduced meals, 92% of students of color, and 36% of families living below the poverty line. Higher Achievement Richmond scholars will participate in 650 hours of Higher Achievement programming annually. Each year we will add a new class of 5th graders, scaling to serve 500 5th - 8th graders by 2014. The program model consists of three components: 1. 2. 3. Summer Academy (launching June 2011) After-School Academy (launching October 2011) High School Placement (launching October 2012) Higher Achievement succeeds because of the dedication of its mentors, who are volunteers from the community, local businesses, public agencies and universities. During the After-School Academy from October – May of each year, each scholar is teamed with three mentors, one for each core subject. These mentors provide ongoing academic guidance and personal support. Higher Achievement will begin recruiting 120 volunteer mentors in early spring 2011 to begin their service in October 2011. Volunteers will commit to mentoring three scholars, one evening per week for two hours, for 25 weeks from October – May. Prior to the start of the After-School Academy, Higher Achievement will provide in depth training in mentoring best practices (in partnership with Virginia Mentoring Partnership), teaching Higher Achievement’s curriculum, employing Advancing Youth Development behavior management principals, and embodying Higher Achievement’s culture of spirit, respect, excellence and collaboration. Challenge: Initiative: Lead Partner: Description: Raising the number of middle school youth transitioning from middle school to high school on time Communities In Schools (CIS) Communities In Schools N2N is partnering with Communities in Schools to provide mentors for approximately 100 new students at each middle school in Richmond, to grow the program and help bring it to scale. In part nership with RPS and regional businesses, Communities In Schools of Richmond (CIS) will engage employees in various mentoring capacities with students, serving each middle school beginning SY 2011-12. CIS of Richmond is devoted to serving the stu dents in 24 Richmond Public Schools by connecting community resources with schools to help every child gain access to the “Five Basics”: (1) A personal one-on-one rela tionship with a caring adult; (2) A safe place to learn and grow; (3) A healthy start and a healthy future; (4) A marketable skill to use upon graduation; and (5) A chance to give back to peers and community. To realize the goal of providing 100 students at each middle school with a one-toone mentor, businesses will be adopt a school and encourage their employees to volunteer in the middles schools in various ways. Opportunities include, but are not limited to serving on a speaker’s bureau to inspire students through the sharing of their career experiences, group mentoring in a classroom to work on special projects, activities or development opportunities, and one-to-one mentoring relationships. Opportunities for volunteer engagement will be made available throughout the school day and after school hours. This initiative focuses on academic support, enrichment opportunities and positive relationships, while supporting students during key transitional periods in their educational careers. Approximately 1,000 volunteers will be needed in school year 2011. We hope to provide a variety of weekly, monthly and yearlong mentoring opportunities for mentors and mentees. From a qualitative standpoint, we hope to see measurable improvements in behaviors, grades, attendance and inevitably promotion rates. We also hope to see evidence and application of skills learned as a result the mentoring relationships. The long term goal (five years) would be to provide each middle school student with a mentor, at which time we would require approximately 5000 volunteers. 16
