Infrastructure Initiatives There are many cross-cutting challenges that must be overcome in order for Mayor Jones’ vision for Richmond - becoming a Tier 1 city - to be realized. Cross-cutting challenges include overarching barriers and methodological challenges that have been historically present in most sectors of life of Richmond’s crisis communities, preventing deep transformation and systemic change. Examples of some of these cross-cutting barriers are: • Recruiting Mentors who are willing to commit to a one-to-one relationship with a child in the community where the child lives • Securing matching funds to ensure program continuation • Making it easy for city residents to find meaningful service opportunities • Encouraging non-profits to tap into key populations in the city to serve, including the large pool of volunteers with professional skills • Measuring the impact of service efforts • Building the capacity of many volunteer-using organizations to recruit, train, and manage volunteers effectively • Simplifying the process for willing and potential volunteers to easily determine critical needs in the community and get plugged in quickly and efficiently The N2N Service Plan includes the creation of two infrastructure initiatives that will help to address the need for greater organizational collaboration, program synthesis and lasting results by helping to bring attention to critical organization interaction effects and linkages among different initiatives, across various sectors. Its two components are: 1. The N2N Brigade - a coalition of collaborative agencies providing volunteer resources and training for individuals and groups from the non-profit, faith, educational, governmental, corporate and philanthropic sectors - as well as volunteer program management/consulting. 2. The N2N Web site and collaborative partners’ various media tools. These synchronized web portals will provide valuable information to both existing and potential volunteers on opportunities to serve, get trained, and make a difference. www.richmondgov.com/neighbortoneighbor 19
