PREFACE
Welcome to the updated version of the sOA+D Research manual for 2012/13.
Over the past year myself and the Research committee have attempted to
consolidate and develop the research culture at our school. We have tried
to provide a steady flow of information about research opportunities and to
support you in transforming your interests, inquiries and insights into ‘research’.
Of course, much more needs to be done. To this end we will—amongst other
things— be running more formal research training sessions over the coming
semesters, continuing work on our academic journal and encouraging the
formation of research centres and clusters.
The new manual is divided into five parts. in Part One, you will find a broad
and inclusive definition of academic research and a brief description of the
major research paradigms in architecture, art and design. Part Two, provides
an introduction to the major sources of research funding provided by soa+d and
kmutt. in Part Three, you will find details of the procedures related to the soa+d
Research fund. in Part four, you will find a range of information relevant to
researchers including details of the Research committee and Research mentor
scheme, soa+d’s statement on research ethics and a list of online and library
resources such as databases, catalogues, journals and books. finally, in Part five,
i have included some of the notes i have been using informally with ajarn at the
school. These are meant as introductions to and jumping off points for important
moments in the process of designing, conducting and publicising your research.
They will be contextualised by an annual seminar and training program.
On behalf of the Research committee i hope that you will find this document
useful. if you would like to discuss any aspect of it further or need advice about
making an application for research funding, please do not hesitate to contact me
