DSG Aldershot
lends support to
Army Safety
Course
The Aldershot in Barracks Equipment Support (IBES)
facility recently played host to members of the Army,
who were on a Safety Officers training course, to
conduct a mock safety, health, environmental and fire
(SHEF) audit as part of their training.
Ten members of the Army spent half a day checking and
auditing the workplace and procedures to ensure that DSG
Aldershot met health and safety requirements.
At the end of the day a debrief was given on the findings,
although not perfect, the feedback about DSG was positive,
with many of the Safety Officers keen to take some best
practice back to their units.
Although the process did lead to some downtime for the
Aldershot team it was well worth the effort to help DSG’s
Army colleagues and promote a positive safety culture.
Captain K G Vaughan, Royal Logistic Corp told Digest, “DSG
Aldershot employees were completely supportive and I know
by the feedback from the course that there were areas that
have been deemed as best practice, which is a great
recognition of the hard work applied by DSG Aldershot and
the organisation as a whole. “
Stuart Packard, Compliance Manager at DSG Colchester told
Digest,” Safety is of fundamental importance and is a key part
of Operational Excellence 6S, so anything that can be done to
improve safety in DSG is positive. I’d like to thank the
Aldershot team for taking part in this exercise."
Change and transformation are becoming an everpresent
part of today’s business environment, and
DSG Bovington is embracing this by re-examining
all its procedures. One of the methods used is the
development of an End-to-End (E2E) process for
Land equipment.
Some of the E2E team, L-R, Bryan Reed, Phil Mancini,
The workshop’s aim was to develop a standardised,
repeatable and optimised E2E process for repair
programmes within the Bovington main site. Initially the
workshop focused on the Challenger 2 platform but the
experienced team quickly realised that the principles
would apply to all platforms and could be generic.
Around thirty Bovington personnel plus representation
from Colchester and Warminster, attended the workshop
held by Ray Padilla. After initial familiarisation with the
tools and techniques involved, the team started to
process-map the E2E process. The team split the process
into three key activities: pre-execution, execution and
post-execution. They also developed other processes to
cover areas such as material and emergent work. Finally,
they identified who was responsible for each step.
The E2E team used a plan, do, check and act cycle to
deliver the objectives of the workshop on schedule. An
implementation plan is now in progress prior to running a
live trial at Bovington.
Brendan Burrows, Head of Business at Bovington, told
Digest, “Bovington has undoubtedly made progress in many
areas, and the trial of the new process is eagerly
anticipated. The new direction of the business streams
provides clarity in many areas, but we need to consider
additional activities that are relevant to the main process
as well. We will hold regular team meetings to ensure
progress is being made.”
