Seven hardy soles from DSG Colchester
and social club (CSSC) bi-annual winter seaangling
competition.
The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families
Association (SSAFA) is the national charity helping
and supporting those who serve in our Armed
Forces, those who used to serve and the families of
both since 1885.
Each year they provide a reliable, caring and trusted service
to more than 50,000 people. A network of in-Service
volunteers work on bases and garrisons in the UK and
around the world, providing invaluable support and care to
the serving forces. No other charity operates on this same
scale across the military community..
B vehicles at DSG Donnington feel very strongly about the
help that SSAFA does for our Armed Forces and for the past
two years have supported “The Big Brew” by providing
homemade cakes and beverages for our customers and
contractors. This year we are proud to report that we
exceeded all expectations and raised £416.56.
DSG must thank the following people who generously
donated not only their time but provisions and without
whom we would not have been able to participate in this
event;
ASDA at Donnington Wood for supplying dry ingredients
Mrs A. Challinor as chief cake maker (Fiona’s mum)
Mr R. Jarvis for his donation of eggs
A special thank you goes to Mr Dave Smith of Midway
Tanker Services Ltd for his very generous donation.
The sky was dark and heavy with rain when salty
sea dogs Gavin Humm, Stuart Sexton, Dave
Tompkins, Pete Moulds and Gary Palmer as well as
two retired employees Barry Gooding and Terry
Knights all made the trip to Hayling Island,
Portsmouth to compete.
Teams from across all areas of the civil service
took part. Nine teams competed in total with the
DSG contingent divided into two teams, suitably
named Weight and Sea and Old and Salty.
The weather, as predicted, was foul and all
competitors were soaked to the skin within
minutes. Dave Tomkins, vehicle mechanic, told
Digest, “After six hours of solid fishing in force
eight weather we were ready for the harbour. We
all caught many fish, not to mention a few colds!”
Unfortunately, both teams failed to lift the coveted
winners’ medals, Weight and Sea coming fifth
overall and Old and Salty bringing up the rear in
seventh place. Roll on Cornwall in 2010.
