Rocko on the loose<br />

If there is one thing on Rocko's mind (and there is little room for more than<br />

one thought anyway) it is to do unto others before they get a chance to do it<br />

to you. However far away they have taken her, he is going to get his (almost)<br />

girlfriend back. He's betting his enemies’ lives on it. After all, she is one cute<br />

babe and you don't see many of those around here, believe me. Then - given<br />

half a chance - he'll boast about his deeds of daring and see if she wants to<br />

oil up his muscles. I think she digs the hair as well, you know. Unlike most of<br />

us, Rocko is blessed with never having had a bad hair day in his life.<br />

Rocko is not the sort of lad to be put off by a bit of murky, swampy desolation,<br />

not to mention mournful graveyards, mountainous mountains, castley castles<br />

and cavernous caves. No, cheerful to the end (preferably someone else's),<br />

he'll battle his way through thick and thicker to avenge and recover his<br />

sweetheart. I mean, she did have a fabulous... smile.<br />

Enemies abound, of course, and as is always the case, they are evil. Evil,<br />

Evil, Evil. Which makes it all the more fun finishing them off in a variety of<br />

amusing and painful ways. If you go around tooled up with bows and arrows,<br />

or dirty great maces with unhygienic spikes in them, then you have to be<br />

expecting trouble. And trouble is what you will get from our lad Rocko.<br />

Fat Ogres, thin Ogres, tall, short and smelly Ogres, with and without armor<br />

or weapons; he's not fussy. All they will get from Rocko is the same reaction:<br />

"Bring it on, big boy! Do you feel lucky?"<br />

Movement<br />

Not that Rocko is a super gymnast or anything, but he hasn't just spent his<br />

time building up those muscles without making sure he's also got the agility<br />

to use them. He has an extensive range of moves, as you would expect from<br />

someone trained as a super warrior. Rocko can walk and run, move<br />

backwards and forwards, creep along (on tiptoes) and strafe from side to<br />

side. Those strong legs mean he is also an excellent jumper. If he jumps with<br />

a free pair of hands, he can also reach up further, allowing himself to grab<br />

onto the ledge or obstacle, before hauling himself up.<br />

Another of his obvious abilities is bending down. Once crouched down,<br />

Rocko can move forward by performing rolls. A rolling Rocko gathers no<br />

pain...<br />

In Battle<br />

With just his massive bare hands, Rocko can defend himself with a variety of<br />

punches. Unfortunately, while great fun, this inflicts less damage on ogres<br />

and the like, so a more effective weapon would be his sword, which he<br />

carries strapped to his back. Sometimes, Rocko might not get time to draw<br />

it, so keep those fists 'handy'.<br />

Draw his sword (he can sheath it again when both hands are needed),<br />

and Rocko becomes a more lethal proposition. Combining attacks with his<br />

range of movements (advance, draw back, bend down, jump, etc) Rocko can<br />

give his enemies a wuppin' with blows from above, below, to the sides, to the<br />

back … and also combo hits.<br />

These suckers are tough though. The enemy doesn’t give up easily, using<br />

head-butts, and even trying to bite him when he finally gets them on the<br />

ground. When this happens, Rocko can stamp on them, and kick them until<br />

they are finished off. Afterwards, Rocko can reap the rewards, taking their<br />

weapons if he wants them.<br />

Obstacles<br />

In addition to Ogres, during the course of his quest, numerous obstacles and<br />

traps will inevitably need to be overcome. Moving platforms to jump onto,<br />

levers to operate, and ropes to shimmy up are just some of the more likely<br />

elements he will encounter. Less frequently, he will come across enormous<br />

blocks of stone that the Ogres have placed in his way. To pull them, our hero<br />

can bury his sword deep into the rock to give himself some leverage, then pull<br />

hard. To push them, his bulging biceps should prove more than up to the task.<br />

Objects<br />

During his travels, Rocko will come across buttons, levers,<br />

torches, blocks, weapons and a range of other objects.<br />

You will know when Rocko is near to something of interest<br />

because he will spot it and look at it as he passes. He's not<br />

as dumb as he looks! Well, that would be difficult…<br />

Potion Power-ups<br />

After each encounter, the enemies may drop potions of different types, which<br />

will disappear after a while. Rocko is too tough for any of them to harm him,<br />

and are worth investigating to see what good effects they can have on him.<br />

They might recharge his energy reserves, powers or gold. For the gold to<br />

have effect, Rocko will need to accumulate a certain amount.<br />

Creature Shock<br />

As our lumbering hero gets closer to his lady, he'll encounter all manner of<br />

creatures trying their hardest to stop him from succeeding. Rocko will bump<br />

into (sometimes literally) many different species of inhabitants, and although<br />

they're all different, only one thought occupies their tiny minds; to stop our<br />

hero from completing his quest.<br />

Weapon Haul<br />

Throughout his quest, Rocko will have access to a variety of weapons, with<br />

which he will take great delight in causing distress to his enemies. Should he<br />

be in the mood, our hero can also use his fists (which are only slightly harder<br />

than his head) to pulverise his foes. But be careful, as much fun as it is to beat<br />

the daylights out of his enemies, Rocko would be better off using a weapon,<br />

as these are a much more effective way of getting his point across. There is<br />

also less chance of a lucky strike from one of his adversaries, who will<br />

certainly be doing their best to fight as dirtily as possible to defeat our hero!<br />

When the game begins, Rocko is armed with a basic sword.<br />

More than adequate for dispatching his enemies, he will find he<br />

can also pick up any weapons that his aggressors drop. He can<br />

then use this new weapon to attack in several different ways.<br />

Rocko can slash at his enemies with a side-to-side action, a<br />

handy maneuver for removing heads, or he can use both hands<br />

and bring the weapon down in a chopping motion. This can be<br />

a very quick and effective method of attacking some of the<br />

smaller foes, who are able to duck under a side to side scything<br />

motion. It's up to you as to how Rocko attacks his enemies; so<br />

why not try out a combination of moves to guarantee getting<br />

your point across?<br />

Any of the weapons that Rocko will pick up on his journeys can be used<br />

against any of his enemies. It is up to you to decide which weapon is most<br />

suitable for the job. Will you attack your enemies head on? Or will you stand<br />

your ground, wait for them enemy to attack, and then pulverise them into the<br />

mud with the oversized hammer?<br />

Whatever weapon and method you choose, remember that these sneaky<br />

foes will not always give you time to choose your weapon of choice, so it<br />

pays to be well prepared! Not sure what lies around a dark corner? Our<br />

advice is to grasp the double bladed Orc axe!<br />

Levels<br />

Rocko, ever a man of daring action and dangerous heroism, will have to<br />

battle his way through many different environments, or 'Levels', to rescue his<br />

sweetheart. Each Level represents a different area of this treacherous land.<br />

Each one has its own unique theme and Rocko will find himself skirmishing<br />

his way through the Mountains, the Caves, the Swamp and the Cemetery.<br />

There are many other exciting Levels, and Rocko will discover them for<br />

himself as he searches for his girlfriend-to-be. Each Level also has numerous<br />

sub-levels, so you'll appreciate that Rocko has a mammoth task ahead of<br />

him. However, he's made of stern stuff and will not be daunted, plowing<br />

through enemies and obstacles alike on this most heroic of quests. If he is<br />

feeling particularly annoyed, he might also take time to explore a little to find<br />

more enemies to vent his frustration on. You never know, he may find some<br />

useful potions, or recover an interesting weapon.<br />

Hints<br />

As Rocko is not too bright, he might not notice a few things. You obviously<br />

will, so the following hints are more for him than you.<br />

Anyway, Rocko should remember that he doesn’t really have to attack<br />

absolutely everything he sees. There are numerous fights that can be<br />

avoided with a little thought. Sometimes, it may be prudent to just move<br />

forward to get to his sweetheart.<br />

Some of the places that Rocko has to go to are dark and scary. Some are so<br />

pitch dark that he can fall down a chasm and kill himself. Remember to make<br />

Rocko grab a torch off the wall when he gets into these areas. You can also<br />

get him to throw the torch ahead to illuminate the way.<br />

Rocko should also take care to avoid any water he comes across. The Ogres<br />

have been dumping indescribably foul things into the rivers and streams for<br />

years and the disgusting water is more than even Rocko can bear. Should he<br />

find himself dunked into the filthy liquid, his fate is as good as sealed.<br />

However, should Rocko be unfortunate enough to be laid out by one of his<br />

foes, poisoned in a lake or otherwise felled, he is too dense and fired up to<br />

take death lying down. Somehow his body will miraculously re-appear near a<br />

Gateway. This will only happen a limited number of times before even he<br />

thinks about it too much and ends up realizing this shouldn't be possible. Too<br />

much thought is, of course, fatal at a time like this, so don't think, just act and<br />

get back your sweetheart!<br />
