Rowville Secondary College Term 2 Issue 7 18 The Rowville Times Friday, May 25, 2012 Tomas Fay Maths Coordinator fay.tomas.m@edumail.vic.gov.au Percentages: Just like statistics, can say whatever you want them to say. Percentages are all around us. In an earlier edition the 10% rule was mentioned as a very simple way to work out percentages. We see percentages a lot with retail as a common thing. Sometimes you wonder though, as is it better to save $5 off a product, or save 25%. Obviously you need more information, how much does the product cost to start with? $5 off a tub of ice cream is great, $5 off the price of a car is not great. One of my first secondary school projects was about percentages. Paraphrasing it was “the cost of groceries goes down by 10%, we celebrate by eating 10% more.” It reads like the money doesn’t change, drop of 10%, rise of 10%, back to where you were surely. However, the trick behind it was that if you take a number, say $100, 10% off leaves $90. If you then add 10%, that equals 99, so it is less than the original. It is not the same as what we expect, if you take away $10, then add it later, you will be left with what you started with, not a different number. Now with sports salary caps percentages are thrown around all the time. At times these are linked to the income the sport makes. In America two of the bigger sports, NBA & NFL had lockouts over many issues, but especially money. One of the big issues was how to split the revenue pie. Players were making close to 60% of income, but with financial pressures, and good negotiating by the owners, this is now at a 50/50 split. But then there is the issue of what money is put into the pie? Is it all revenue, or just the profits? What is counted, and Maths Corner “Better late than never” what isn’t counted is very important. A massive deal is the television rights where a huge chunk of the money is. We also hear about percentages with salary caps. Most of us don’t actually know what the salary cap is, but we often hear that teams are hard up against it in the AFL. It doesn’t seem to happen as much now, but back in my school days, there was a lot of talk about the minimum of the salary, 92.5%, at which St Kilda & Fitzroy operated. I often think that is where St Kilda breached the salary cap 20 years ago, paying too little money, not oo much. The AFL salary cap this year is 8,780,000. With their extra players and concessions, and paying Ablett, Karmichael, and Israel Folau, the new expansion teams have a cap closer to 10 million. Just as a comparison, the NFL salary cap is at 120 million, down from a previous high of 123 million a few years ago. The NBA is at 58 million, but averages out to more money per player with the much smaller size of a basketball team. The MLS (soccer) comp has a salary cap of under 3 million with exceptions, so it shows the difference in popularity of the sports. There is no salary in major league baseball or the high level of Soccer in Europe. There is a powerful group called the G14 which is made up of the biggest clubs, Man U, Chelsea, AC Milan, Barcelona, and so on. In 2005 there was an idea floated that clubs could only spend up to 70% of the club’s income. This never went through and occasionally you hear about clubs really struggling for money, even the giant Spanish clubs. In Scottish soccer there tends to be only two teams at the top, both from Glasgow, Rangers & Celtic. This year Celtic held a slight advantage but Rangers declared bankruptcy, and took a 10 point penalty which handed the title to Celtic. Will the Rangers still be around for next year, and would the 70% rule have worked for them? A documentary was on in the past few weeks about the setting up of the Premier League in the late 80’s. One of the big issues was that all English soccer clubs in the FA, of which there are somewhere near 100, all got an equal share of the television rights, which weren’t much at the time. Rightly or wrongly, the Premier League was established with the bulk of the television money going to those clubs, with little below. Ten years ago I heard that a game on Sky Sports for Premier League was worth $1,000,000 to the clubs involved. Similar set up for Division 1 was worth $50,000. Recently West Ham United won promotion back the Premier League, apparently worth somewhere around $100 million extra. They will get the same percentage of a larger amount of money. Happy times for them and the other two clubs that got promoted. Not so good for the relegated clubs.
Rowville Secondary College Term 2 Issue 7 19 The Rowville Times Friday, May 25, 2012 Mid Term Interschool Sports Report Michelle Aumann Sport & Houses Coordinator (West) It has been a busy start to term 2 with sports on every week. The senior boys AFL team have started the year well by winning the district competition quite convincingly and progress to Eastern Zone on the 19 th of June. We had one boys team represent the west in year 7 volleyball. The team made up of players from the maths and science academy, did a great job at the district level, making the grand final. A big thanks to Emma Krauer and Tara Reinshagen for umpiring and supporting the year 7’s on the day. Our senior baseball team had the Eastern Zone event on April 30 which they won and progress to the State Final on Tuesday May 29 – keep an eye out for results in the next newsletter. Our senior girls football team played on a horrible cold day where they got beaten by the East in the first round of competition, knocking them out. The 9-12 students have been competitive in their year level competitions, given the tough opponents of the East. With the East playing basketball in the premier division, this opened up an opportunity for the West to win the district competition. The west girls did just this, beating Fairhills quite easily in the grand final. They will play Eastern Zone on the 2 nd of August. Cross Country was the last event for week 5 with many year 7 students running but with our best performances coming from Teagan Sheldon (2 nd ) and Ryan Laffan (5 th ). Along with Teagan and Ryan, the following qualified for Eastern Zone – Luke Morgan, Lessica Lillie, Ebony Blight, Emma Santamaggio and Amy Syer. Good luck on June 22!
