Rowville Secondary College Term 2 Issue 7 2 The Rowville Times Rowville Sports Academy Applications Any students who wish to apply for the Rowville Sports Academy for 2012 need to express interest to Simone Farrugia on 9755 4651. Sports available are soccer, golf, netball and basketball with two new sports being introduced next year as well. Trials for these sports will take place on June 15. With the support of the Eastern Ranges Football Club we are introducing football from Year 7-12 with the Ranges Coach ex Essendon premiership player Darren Bewick being appointed to the RSA Head Coaches role. In volleyball we have Peter Bundy who has been running lunchtime, after school session this year taking over as coach in the RSA for 2012. Parents interested in the AFL and volleyball programs are also asked to contact Simone. Edutest The Entry Exam for the Maths and Science Academy was held at the Western Campus on Wednesday 23 rd May. By 9.30 am the reception area was filled with nervous yet excited grade sixes from various primary schools and year 8 students and parents. The Entry exam is conducted by an independent Edutest assessor . Students registered on line for the exam w h i c h c o n s i s t e d o f t w o components literacy and numeracy. Students enjoyed a short twenty minute break with a drink and a piece of fruit as they ventured into the yard for a bit of fresh air. It was great to see the grade six students explore the Friday, May 25, 2012 Assistant Principals’ Report outdoors, some had a wander around the yard, others watched the sporting activities of the RSC students at recess and a few energetic boys played soccer. The reception area was buzzing again at 1pm as parents came in to pick up their children who clearly wanted to share how they felt they performed . Results of the exam will be available to parents in the next fortnight and shortly after the letters of offer will be mailed out. We thank all participants and parents and we wish you every success in gaining entry into the Maths and Science Academy. Uniform One of the aspects that we really enjoy about working at a school is the support and sense of belonging that comes from being a part of a community. People are not biologically designed to be alone, we need each other to survive and thrive. Whilst individuals have achieved wonderful things, when they join forces with others, the results can be extremely powerful. The community of Rowville Secondary College includes students, parents and staff and when we support and help each other every individual within our community benefits. It is with this in mind that we are commencing a blitz on student uniform. The colder weather has brought with it the appearance of lots of extra clothing that is not a part of our school uniform, such as beanies and hoodies and lots of incorrect footwear. The wearing of College uniform by all students is compulsory in response to the strong and clear preference of parents and the community for such a policy. The compulsory nature of the uniform has been agreed to in order to: •Create a strong sense of College identity within the College and in the community. •Create equal opportunity for all students and to prevent social or class distinctions. •Maintain appropriate health and safety standards. •Maintain financial equality for parents. In the event that a student is unable to be correctly attired in school uniform the following procedures must be followed: 1. An explanatory note written and signed by parents/guardians must be provided in order to validate a request for a short term uniform pass. The note must be dated and specify the item of uniform for which the pass is being sought, the reasons why, and the period of time for which the pass is sought – this should be for a short time only. A medical certificate must be provided for students who need to have a pass for an extended period of time for medical reasons. 2. All students (Years 7-12) who require a short term uniform pass should obtain such a pass from their head of school or team leader prior to Period One. 3. Students who are out of uniform without a short term uniform pass will be issued with a College after-school detention. Parents will be given at least 24 hours notice if their child is required to attend a detention. Continues on page 3...

The Junior/Senior School Manager or Assistant Principals may contact parents/guardians if they are of the belief that the reason for the student being out of uniform is inappropriate or unreasonable. In such circumstances, the student may be sent home for the offending item to be rectified or the parent/guardian may be requested to bring the required item of uniform to school so that the student can be correctly attired. 5. In all cases where a student cannot Friday, May 25, 2012 Assistant Principals’ Report be correctly attired in school uniform, the nearest approximation of the missing item should be worn. 6. Students who are frequently out of uniform (approved or unapproved) will have escalating consequences. Parents may also be contacted to discuss the issue. We are asking for parental support with our uniform blitz so that we are sending a strong, clear and consistent message to students. Could you please ensure that your child leaves and returns home in full school uniform, check their bag for additional clothing and ensure their shoes are appropriate. If students are cold there are optional items that are permitted for extra warmth such as plain white skivvies and navy blue scarves.
