As a form of resistance to slavery, arson was most often carried out by<br />

women. In 1740, Charleston, South Carolina, condemned a <strong>Black</strong> woman<br />

to de<strong>at</strong>h after killing slave owners and poisoning their food.<br />

In 1862, a fight broke out between a community of marooned, former<br />

slaves and Confeder<strong>at</strong>e soldiers in Virginia. Women helped put the<br />

soldiers to de<strong>at</strong>h, and the maroons won.<br />
