Tracing the Legacy of Slavery
Melanie Wang, Massachusetts
What should be included in this guide?
A list of books and/or scholars who examine
the relationship between anti-Black racism,
class struggle, and the legacy of slavery in
the United States.
Two examples that immediately come to
mind are Out of the House of Bondage, by
Thavolia Glymph, and Labor of Love, Labor
of Sorrow, by Jacqueline Jones.
The former focuses on the relationships
between mistresses and household slaves in
Southern plantation slavery, and details how
constructions of race and gender played
important roles in the subjugation of female
slaves.
Labor of Love, Labor of Sorrow, also begins
in the era of plantation slavery but moves all
the way through history to the present. It
focuses on the experiences of Black women
in the labor force over the course of U.S.
history.
