Indeed, often his still lifes open onto the populated spaces of genre pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and are<br />

<strong>in</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>guishable from them. But the most important pa<strong>in</strong>ter of expanded-space<br />

bourgeois still lifes was Fant<strong>in</strong>-Latour, and where the example set by Chard<strong>in</strong> is not<br />

felt <strong>in</strong> Caillebotte's luxury tabletops, it still underlies the work of Fant<strong>in</strong>-Latour, both<br />

<strong>in</strong> his simple fruit pieces and <strong>in</strong> his more complex flower-piece table corners, whose<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ers contrasted to loose fruit are rem<strong>in</strong>iscent of the same device <strong>in</strong> Chard<strong>in</strong>'s<br />

work, and <strong>in</strong> his signature facture, which has someth<strong>in</strong>g of the feel of Chard<strong>in</strong>'s handl<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

though much ref<strong>in</strong>ed and muted. And Fant<strong>in</strong>-Latour was extremely important<br />

for Cézanne, particularly for his flower pieces. 16<br />
