"Swimming is a virtually injury-free activity since there isn't any stress on bones and joints," stated Walter Zeiler, Auto Gub's life manager. "It offers tremendous benefits for individuals with leg or back problems." - Joggers and cyclists often incorporate swimming — the .nation's most 'popular par : ticipatory sport — into an overall fitness program because it builds upper body strength. Individuals starting a fitness program should swim 25 yards, the length of a standard pool, then pull themselves out of a the pool and walk back to the starting point. That gives the body a short workout, a brief rest period, and the pulling action " strengthens the arms. Heart rate is the key to how intensely, an individual should exercise. Swimmers should subtract their age from 220, then multiply the resulting figure by .6 for iLibrary Corner the minimum and by .9 for the maximum rate the heart should work during the activity. For example, a 30-year old individual should have an exercise heart rate between 114 and 171 beats per minute. DETERMINE the per minute heart rate by counting pulse beats at the side of the wrist or neck for 10 seconds and multiplying by six. I've kept track, recently, of questions that we've been asked. Most of them are easy. We get lots of requests for the correct spelling of words. We are asked for the names and addresses of our Congressmen. We look up state capitals and flowers. Those are all easy. Some of the questions, however, pose a bit of a challenge — and they are really the most fun. One of our favorites was "How many feet long must a boat b£ before it is called a ship?" (normally, it's 45 feet, unless lis a working vessel such as a tugboat). Another was "How many years constitute one generation?" fabout 33). Once in a while we never find the answer. Do you know who gave New York the'nickname "the Big Apple" and why? We don't. Many of the questions concern weights and measurements; how many gallons will a certain sire cylinder hold, or, how many grams in a pound (you have to know whether it's avoirdupois or troy weight) and, where is the highest spot in the Lower Peninsula? We think we settle a lot of bets. People want to know what year Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby and did he win the Triple Crown 9 (It waa 1973 and he did) How many fillies ever won the Derby? (Two: Regret In 1915 and Genuine Risk in 1980) Who was the last bare knuckle heavyweight champion? (John L. Sullian, of course). Then, there are tne tnck questions: WHO was the first President of the United States? (It's wasn't George.) As I said, we don't know all of the answers. "This year's tournament is sure to be an exciting one with Larry Olds as the chairman and the championships have a whole new loe* this year," Brown said..
